Which Lens

SLC,

I got the Tamron for £216 from onestop-digital which was considerably cheaper than a Canon!

Yes you are correct but I've found that when working with macro lenses ANY movement; be it movement of the photographers hands or movement of the subject will cause severe problems. Also trying to focus on an object that is constantly moving is nearly impossible with a macro lens. This is why I use a faster aperture and shutter speed as I mentioned above.

yep thats why i use a tripod, or properly positioned flash/flashes. something else worth noting! for any given image size, on the ccd, the shorter the focal length the closer you need to be. so it is also worth looking a slightly longer focal length lens. simply because you can stay that little bit farther away, and retain the same final image size. this will have no effect on the depth of field, which will stay the same, as the image has not changed

The problem with tripod mounting for shooting macros of fish is that they never hold still! I see what you are trying to say bobbyboy, but having the fish swim in and out of the frame because your camera is stuck on a tripod is no way to go about it.

It doesn't really matter though, everyone has his/her own methods I suppose.
