Hi,
I have a 55 gallon tank that I set up to put Lake Malawi cichlids in and I don't have a clue on what to get. What can go with what? I have done some research but usually it never gives which fish will go together.
I like:
Red Zebras
Demason's Cichlid
Red Empress
Lemon Labidochromis
Cynotilapia Afra 'Jalo Reef'
Melanochromis Johanni
Blue Peacock Cichlid

These are a few types that my pet store sells that I like.

Thanks

Red Zebras - metriaclima estherae, mildly aggressive, works well with all but the most aggressive species

Demason's Cichlid - pseudotropheus demasoni - fairly peaceful with any fish that doesn't look like it, however, extremely aggressive towards it's own kind (conspecific aggression). Fishkeepers have found the magic numbers with this species tend to be to keep a single specimen or 12+. Any less than 12 and they tend to kill each other.

Red Empress - Protomelas taeniolatus (Namalenje Is.), hap, at 9" too large for your tank.

Lemon Labidochromis - labiochromis caeruleus, great fish, peaceful enough that multiple males can be kept together, and ignored by all but the most aggressive species. Especially beautiful in a l.caeruleus/p.demasoni set up.

Cynotilapia Afra 'Jalo Reef' - another nice addition to any tank, can be kept with other mildly aggressive species.

Melanochromis Johanni - one of the highly aggressive melanochromis species, while m.johannii is on the lower end of aggression with them, still avoid in any tank smaller than 75 gallons.

Blue Peacock Cichlid - There are several species with the common name of blue peacock, most likely one of the Aulonocara stuartgranti species. Peacocks do not deal well with mbuna aggression and are best avoided.

So, a couple of stocking suggestion.
1m/4f m.estherae
5 l.caeruleus
1m/4f c.afra (Jalo reef)

or

15 p.demasoni
6 l.caeruleus

Hope that helps narrow it down for you. -Dawn
