erm idk, actually young i guess. he says he sees like 10 young and only 1 or 2 survives cause the rest get eaten

Out of the fish I kept, Neoheterandria elegans dropped 1-3 young every day. But that doesn't really help you if you want to know about a specific species. It does sound like your friend is talking about livebearers in a bare tank.

It's surprising to hear that those fish breed so much, considering they are quite rare in the hobby

It's probably because they're not "pretty" enough. The fry have a very low survival rate as well, without special feeding or a tank full of tiny live animals, because they're born not that much larger than a lot of the smaller egg laying fish hatch at.
