I'm thinking of changing my planted community tank a touch.

I've got two Angel Fish in there at the moment that I want to keep, and the rest are just the usual Neon, Guppy, Molly etc that came with the tank that I will be getting rid of shortly.

I would like two breeding Kribs in there, but what other Chichilds can I keep in the tank with Kribs and Angel Fish?

190L Juwel Trigon.

Any advice, help would be great!

Thankyou :good:

Edit: I hear the pH is an issue? Mine is 7.0 - 7.5 if that helps? Wouldn't want to mess with the pH if I can help it. And I'd like to keep it as a planted tank... or is that out the window if I decide to change?

in my experience kribs breed very easily and harrass the whole tank!
maybe you might get lucky and they wont be as bad for you, but i definately wouldnt get anymore cichlids other than the kribs and angels. but just an opinion, hope it helps, cheers dan

A breeding pair of kribs will terrorise the whole tank I expect.

My advice is to only get a single krib and then you could maybe think of getting a rainbow cichlid, or bolivian ram or something like that if you want another cichlid.

I guess they are out the window then!

Rainbows and Rams got to be kept single? Or can you get a couple of each?

you could try keyhole cichlids very peaceful cichlids and if you are lucky you may get them to breed, i never did though boo! lol

Glad you are keeping your Angels. :) Blue Rams usually require higher temperatures so probably wouldn't be the best option for you. Bolivian Rams are easier to get along with in terms of requirements etc. Keyholes are nice and are considered some of the most peaceful Cichlids available.

Normally i would be raving about Rainbow Cichlids, i can't get enough of them... But i put them in with a few plants and the plants suffered big time... Would hate your plants to suffer after you just spent all that money on them mate. :look:

You may want to look at a pair of Apistogramma's too. :) Kribs can be sods but again it depends on the temperament of the fish in question. You could consider something like Honduran Red Points, mine have been extremely well behaved, even with fry. offer enough caves, rocks and hidey holes and they should be fine. I admit i have been very lucky with all my fish as to not have any that are really aggressive when breeding. Luck of the draw mate i'm afraid.

Good luck :)

Great reply.. can't thank you enough! I think I will leave the Kribs, and you're correct, I don't want my plants to get demolished !

I think I will go down the local pet stores and see what Keyhole Cichlids and Bolivian Rams they have in store at the weekend! Is there many types of Keyhole Cichilds, or? I have no clue on these kind of fish what so ever .

Will do some research before I pick any up that's for sure!

Cheers mate :good:

just in reply to that last message appistogrammas need a lower ph of 7.5 which he has, and could be an expensive mistake, again through trial and error appisto's thrive of a ph around 6 to 6.5 so not good for that tank but i may be wrong lol

Keyholes are just that, Keyholes. No different types i don't believe?!

I may get flamed for this, but... My local P@H have usually got some decent looking young in. I would get a group of 3 or 4. They're normally widely available anyway as said, they're usually quite peaceful so for people wanting a 'beginner' Cichlid they're ideal. You may find that if you have a quick look on AC there might be a breeding pair/trio for sale somewhere near you. 1 male will usually breed with 2 different females with relative calm.

Good point mate, i hadn't took that into consideration.

Sounds like a plan to me bud :). I'll read up on them incase there is anything I need to know!

What's this AC you speak of? (I guess it's a website that people sell fish from! I've never used one personaly) hehe

Cheers :good:

http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk a pretty decent site for finding a few bargains. Also check your local Gumtree for anyone selling some.

Hope i haven't broke any rules by linking to it?!

+1 for Keyholes, they're great and there's only one type.
Crytoheros Cutteri are great (althought can be hard to find), and relatively peaceful when breeding.
Festive Cichlids are also pretty peaceful although mine doesn't get along too well with my Angelfish at times.
Bolivian Rams are great and are a lot more hardy the normal Rams.
Apistos wouldn't do too well in your water parameters.
Red-breast Cichlids can be quite peaceful.
All depends on the individual though, you could find a super-peaceful Convict Cichlid but I doubt it .

Thank you for your input :good:

Will they be listed as Red-Breast, Festive etc at the shops? Or will they come under another name? (Guessing the most common, if thats what you've listed?)

I'll do some image searching so I know what I'm looking for.

What is the limit for the tank? Juwel Trigon (corner tank) 190L. Don't want to over stock with these :good: and I wouldnt mind trying to get a breeding pair of one if possible, what would you reccomend?

Cheers!

I would try an get an established pair of keyholes. And see how it goes. I added too many too soon and things got a bit hectic... start off slowly with them.
