Hi everyone, LJS from Lincolnshire, UK. Just retired and would love to get into this hobby. I was thinking of getting myself a 4' x 2' x 2' complete with cabinet and there seems to be a lot out there for the taking. I was going to position it in smallish room 12' x 9' but the problem is there is full glass patio doors at one end. Will this let too much light onto the aquarium even I draw the vertical blinds, I cannot really position the tank in another room. Thanks.

Hi LJS I had a similar situation with my big tank the main issue you will have is algae which will grow in abundance in a new tank in high light I found the best way I could handle the extra light was to put the tank into a corner so the width faced the light from outside if that makes sense? I then put blackout materials on all sides but the front and one end but then stuffed it full of light hogging plants mainly plants with large leaf surfaces and giant valis (a reed type plant) then also added a few algae eating fish the best one I had was a medusa head plec that cleared out carpets of algae within a week!

Also need to consider whether the room is insulated. Aquarium heaters can only do so much and cooling aquariums is even more difficult...

In some ways, considering light blocking curtains over the blinds might be useful.
