I am changing my filter to an external one(aqua one aquis 1250) i currently have a juwel internal filter with the heater slotted inside where can i put the heater or should i also buy a different heater.

heater should be located where there is alot of water flow, so put it close to a filter input or output

ok thanks do you think i should also buy an external heater also, i seen one that fits on the filter pipes

Your call, but my personal opinion is a preferation of internal heaters. Position it below the filter outlet if at all possible, remembering to position it at an angle, so the heat rises up and into the tank instead of up vertically and potentially interefering with the in-built thermostat.

Terry.

wow, I never thought that having my heater vertically could cause a problem, but mine is, and it's a pain in the butt to keep the temp the same all the time. I always have to adjust the heater

do any members use one of those hydro external heaters if so how do they rate them.

you wont go far wrong with an Hydor external heater.
plus they are attached to the fiter outlet, which means even water heating.. (providing you have your flow pattern right.)

as they are about the same price as an internal, I can't think of a single reason not to use one.

You could go for the best of both worlds and get a Rena SmartHeater. This is an internal heater but plumbs into the inlet pipe of your filter so water is drawn through it on its way to the filter.

They're unbreakable and cool to touch on the outside so plec and algae eater friendly. I have one and it's awesome, works far less hard to keep the water temp stable.

Theyre quite expensive but excellent quality...

As for putting the heater at an angle, I recently saw a video clip on YT where the guy there said he always puts the heater vertical, I did raise this question on here and it seems a lot are in favour of it being vertical, but the decision is yours at the end of the day.

my heaters have been vertical for over 25 years, i have never had a problem keeping water temps consistant, the quality of the heater you purchase is more important than how its placed in the tank
