Where To Buy...

hi, betta aquaria in byker, newcastle had some female fighters, so did aquatic center in south shields, just not sure if the fish are of good quality from there, never bought anything and only had a look inside. are there any good shops in/around sunderland u can recommend? i only just started having fish and just wondered what else there is around here (am from newcastle).thanks

I'd certainly recommend Betta aquaria's female bettas. I have 2 from there; they are right at the back of the shop top shelf in the middle.

I've been to fish alive in Durham a few times and I'm not sure I'd like to buy anything from there (it was recommedned to us but we've never been thrilled with their stocking).

Tyne Valley Aquatics in Mickley/near Prudhoe are very good (you might want to call in advance and ask if they have females in) - they don't often but when they do they are very nice! I have 2 from there :).

Dobbies Garden Centre at Ponteland (near the airport) normally have females in.

The best place for a good selection is Peter Barrats(Gosforth) HOWEVER their stocking is usually not very healthy. Although I did give in and buy a pure white female a while ago.

Thanks alot.

Well I have been to betta aquatics this morning, what a great place it is. Best fishj store I have ever been too m shame its 30 minutes drive from me :(
I bought 3 females who are settling in great and beginning to show their lovely colours
thanks for your help :)

glad you got your female bettas, waiting for the pics now :)

Waiting for their stripes too go. Although they are very adventurous at the minute and it's so hard to catch them for a picture.. Happy with my 3 girls though. Spaghetti, hoop & chip :)

Excellent; I’m pleased you had a good visit. The shop is about 5mins drive away from my house (and on the way home from work) but the opening hours aren’t great.

It’s a really small shop but they have lots of tanks inside and I find their stock quite good. I must say I don’t particularly like the staff (some are ok but others are very temperamental), BUT for all the times I’ve been in there I can probably count the dead fish I’ve seen on one hand (and I go quite often) and they always seem to be cleaning the tanks. Unlike other shops where I’ve never seen cleaning and there are loads of dead fish. They normally have a good live plant section too and they are really cheap; I occasionally buy them for the goldfish to eat, 50p per bunch is worth it. I also have a selection of goldfish from there bought 10 years ago and they are still going strong too hehe.

My two girls from there are huge and very healthy (one is a purple Cambodian and one is a red Cambodian).

Also, I’m looking forward to seeing your pictures too.
