I know of plantsalive, but they dont have most of what i want in stock!

I know of java plants, but ive heard there sh*te.

After that im pretty much stumped for a decent site after greenline!

Who do you use?

For the few plants I have had since, apart from a narrow java fern from AquaEssentials, I have obtained them via the peer network, as in other hobbyists. Stem plants and mosses are especially easy to obtain in this manner, as they tend to be pruned and you can grow the trimmings.

Other than that, I've heard better things about Plants Alive than I have heard (and experienced) about Java.

It's going to just be tropica plants from aqua essentials and cheap cuttings of stuff to try out from plants alive for me.

Both stock tropica so you get what you pay for.

I have always found that amusing, as if you don't get what you paid for you usually tell them so and get a replacement. :D

Apart from some rare plants, I have never found Tropica Plants to be worth all the extra expense to be honest, especially for things like stem plants. Sure the Tropica ones come potted and with roots, but you remove them from the pots anyway and stems soon grow roots. I do believe however that if you are looking for a mother plant the Tropica XL range is excellent. Personally I believe that the whole hype around Tropica plants is just that, hype. There are many other nurseries that do potted plants that are of an equivelent quality, but cheaper.

Take my echinodorus red flame for example, I bought this as a potted plant from Greenline, who I believe used to source their potted plants from Oriental in singapore. It's now a huge healthy plant, and when I got it was in good health with a nice root system, yet I paid quite a bit less than the Tropica price. :good: My dwarf hairgrass was potted from Greenline as well, and again has grown really well. The only Tropica plant I have in any of my tanks is a narrow java fern that I split into two for my shrimp and snail tank.

i get tropica plants for slow growers like java fern etc. I got a 1" rhizome with 1 leaf on from plants laive! With tropica you get a well estalished, and that wasnt a XL either!

Maidenhead stores usually get tropica or aquafleur, they are good quality too. I too find it pointless for stem plants, it will double in size an about 2 weeks anyway!

I had that happen with Greenline once, turned out his source was sending dodgy pots out. I sent Andy an email and within a day or so he had send me out a shed load of java fern, including windelov and normal ones, all with plent of leaves per each piece of rhizome. I do agree though that a good quality potted is better for things like java fern and anubias, have you tried buying them potted from Plants Alive though? As if you get it out of the pot to find they are all cuttings you can soon get onto them about it I should think.

As I said though, the last plant I bought was a narrow java fern from Aqua Essentials. I wanted something special for my shrimp tank, and didn't want to risk Plants Alive.

The pot plants are a joke from there...I emailed them and they resent stuff that was actually worse. My one pot of tropica hairgrass worked out much cheaper for the actual amount of growing plant.

i recently started replacing the cruddy plastic pllants in my tank with real and i use plants alive got my 1st order yesterday and planted them they are excellent condition healthy plants and well priced . so pleased in fact that i have just placed a second order

i dont know what do to as some poeple say they are good and some bad. i spose its personal experiance!

My understanding is that Java and Plants Alive act mostly as agents, taking order until they have a larger one and then ordering from plant growers in Singapore or the like. So the quality of the plants is going to depend largely on the quality of the ones that they receive from the growers.

The absolute BEST place to get good quality plants from really is from other hobbyists most of the time.
