20 tall, I just got a 20 long but need to get it set up before I can add any fish.
Ah...not much footprint with a 20T...but in a 20L, a honey or a pearl gourami would probably work as a centerpiece fish

Avoid the dwarf gouramis, overbred and prone to disease

Pearl Gouramies like to live in small groups, so I wouldn’t consider keeping one on its own.

I've kept single PGs several times over the years, they've all fared well

They will do ok, but they’d prefer company (as long as there are more females than males).

definitely would not put a betta fish in a community tank. But! All you need for one is a 5 gallon tank. It’s not a big tank and it could probably go in your kids room and be her “personal” fish

A female Pearl or honey gourami would probably be good. Males tend to be more aggressive. And the pearls and honey are the most peaceful of the gourami. Or you could get a single Bolivian Ram
