I have a Guppy fry that is currently living in a hatchery tank in my 70ltr tank. He is just a few days over one month old and has grown to just over 1cm in length.

He is in the hatchery tank on his own and I was wondering when is the time to promote him to the main tank with my other fish ( 3 x Harlequin, 3 x Neon Tetra, 3 x Zebra Danio, 1 x Platy ).

Thanks.

Hi there,

I would suggest waiting alittle longer. I had 10 fry that we're exactly the same size and age (well about a week older) and I released them, I am now down to 6 :( as 4 were killed within 10 minutes of being free! It was my neon tetra's and 1 of the male guppies I have that killed them! The 4 previous fry I had were well over 10weeks old when I released them and they seem to be fine.

Hope this helps!

So 2 1/2 months before you suggest releasing him into the tank? That's not a problem. I'd really rather wait than risk it.

Is between 2-3 months generally the recommended time they should spend in the hatchery?

I don't think there is a hard and fast rule as to when you should release them, I think the general rule is that you should let them out once they are big enough not to be eaten, but i have waited until they are big enough to be accepted as a fully grown fish x

I release mine at about 3-5 weeks into my tank with 4 large guppy females, 1 platy and 15 neons. I've never had neons kill fry, even when I left newborns in there (but my guppies do eat newborns).

My fry are about 1 - 1 1/2 cm long at 1 month old.
