I've got a few pieces of mopani wood and 1 piece of hard un-named driftwood that I bought from the LFS. I've been having problems, though, with the wood growing and re growing white mold stuff. I've been told that it eventually stops, and since the piece of driftwood that my java fern is anchored to hasn't grown any mold yet, I believe it.

I'm just wondering when it stops coming back?

I've been told it's harmless, but it smells awful, looks gross, and I doubt the fish appreciate it any more than I do.

Especially since my khuli loaches tend to lounge in the pockets when it's clean, but won't touch them when it's all moldy.

Hello, I have a mopani wood as well(medium sized) and it had the white mold from when I first placed it in the tank for a couple of weeks, and then it went away. I have spoken with professionals and they assured me it is harmless (and no, not petsmart workers etc.), and my corydoras actually like eating it after their omega shrimp pellets anyways.

However, I understand people want that nice clean look for their tanks. So the best and fastest method you can do is boil the wood for a bit. Some have said a slow boil for 2 hours, others say 4. Another longer method is letting it soak in water for a bit before putting it in the tank, and from my experience you will also get rid of the "tanning" effect. Just know that it is a natural occurring effect, you are doing nothing wrong. Hope this helps, take care.

one of my four monpani wood peices started growing this stuff I'm not sure why that one in particular grew it but either way I gave it a really good scrubbing under the cold tap and it hasn't grown back since (about a month has passed) I just used a brush that had fairly stiff brissles- it took about 2-5 minutes. Boiling wood can cause the fibres to lossen a bit and cause it to rot quicker (but do correct my if I'm wrong on that point)
