My largest tank has been set up since 20.6.08. Its a 96 litre. I cycled with zebra danios. After testing and testing I got nitrites and ammonia down to 0 during the fourth week. I added some neon tetras and albino corys. I had some problems with them at first nitrite went up to 0.25 and I had a dead tetra. Then I noticed one with what I thought was whitespot, added remedy lost another 3 neon tetras so I removed them to a hospital tank where the remaining 6 are doing well. I was able to use mature sponge in the hospital tank from my kids tank (same type of filter). Im going to keep the neons in a separate tank now as they are doing well in here. After adding the Interpet whitespot remedy to the main tank I also lost 3 corys. No signs of disease on them. I wonder if the remedy was out of date?

I have since learned that the pet shop (chain) I bought the tetras and corys from is the pet shop from hell and around here no one who knows fish buys fish from there. Wise after the event.

The tank has had zero ammonia and nitrite for a week now, this is after the slight rise to 0.25 with tetras. The tank has in it 6 zebra danios, 5 very tiny albino bristlenoses and one albino cory.

When can I add more fish.... it lacks colour. I would really like something simple and bright like platys.

I have learnt by experience which places to get them from.

By the way, I have a quarantine tank now!!!

you should definatley wait a couple of weeks, when you've cycled with fish you build up the stock slowly so you go through the initial cycle, once ammonia and nitrite are steady at 0 then you just leave things as they are for 3/4 weeks, then add a couple more fish, monitor things as you may get a mini cycle at this point, do your water changes and so on to get things in order, once ammonia and nitrite are at 0 then leave it another 3/4 weeks before getting more and then so on until it's done.

the longer you leave it between additions they less chance of a mini cycle there is. the older the bacteria colony the quicker they can multiple ot deal with the extra fish load.
