nitrates aren't really a problem, but yes the faster growing species would be a good move.

thanks, thought so. the only plants that they sell that are truly aquatic at the garden centre down the road are Elodea densa and Cabomba caroliniana, so he might put a load of that in until he can plant it properly, as i don't think we'll be able to go to our local maidenhead for a while.
