Well, im in search of ideas. I want a plain black background that actually looks good

Ive regular aquarium backgrounds, got on my nerves when water got down the back

Black card, also got on my nerves

Fablon - Didn't leave me with a clean solid black colour

So now i think im going to get a thin piece of rigid black plastic and silicone it to the back

What does everyone else use?

Edit: Painting isnt an option, i dont want to drain my tank and there isnt enough room to get behind it to paint.

i know you said that you didnt want to drain your tank so this is not an option but i used juwel limestone 3d effect backing that silicones on the inside before filling. it looks wicked and now even better theres a bit of algae on it :good:

I paint mine. I do have one of my tanks that I used regular blue background on. I covered the back of the tank with a good amount of petroleum jelly and used a paint scrapper to adhear the background to the tank. This is what it looks like.

Edit: clicked reply to fast.

my 3d background came unstuck so i had to remove as fish got stuck behind, cannot be bothered to drain and sylicone again,so i have nothing just the colour yellow from the wall

I added some Juwel 3d rock effect backing a few months ago. I did a 50 % water change and before refilling I attached the backing...job done and it transformed my tank :good:

To nelly,

I have a mass of cables and stuff behind my tank so thats not an option, siliconing a ridgid piece of black plastic to the outside back is looking to be my best bet...

And im not a fan of 3D backgrounds, they work in same tanks but it doubt it would work in mine...

You wouldn't believe the difference the petroleum jelly makes. I would say it looks 500 times better.

I agree, i tried it with my first background but it got on my nerves as the tank lid would constantly have it peeling off.

It shouldn't be pulling off. The jelly acts as a glue and holds the background to the tank.

i siliconed sheets on slate to the back and i think it looks really good when you have moss growing on it

Some of my tanks still have the plastic backing that you buy off the roll at the lfs. I've also found that a cheap plastic shower curtain can be cut down to size and taped on the back, even if they are near a wall. I like the white ones. I've also found that, since I have plain white walls, my tanks are fine with no backing at all. I just pull the wire from the light off to the side so it can't be seen hanging down behind it. Not very fancy, I know, but it gives a feeling of spaciousness that a dark background doesn't.

When I moved into my present apartment three years ago, I bought all new backings of the reflective blue/silver kind. They looked nice, but it was nearly impossible to take a picture because of the reflection from the flash.

I paint mine. I just use some tape and a good quality spraypaint. Looks great when finished, and if you ever need to remove the paint, a razor blade does the trick.

i used a standard tank background and vaseline to put the background on the tank then a used black insulating tape on the top edge to stop water getting in and it has lasted well with no peeling
