What i wrong with getting random colors from breeding bettas? people on here say do not breed 2 petstores for random colors and a few other things. But what is wrong with the random colors?

Its not so much random colours as random tail types and unknown genetic history. You will get a much poorer quality of fry

really you would get random tail types? i thought they just bred colors together.

Pet store bettas aren't that good to breed because:

*you don't know who the betta's parents werre, so if you wanted a specific color, and even if the bettas were both one color, their parents might have had another color and the fry might end up with some of it
*they are usually quite old and don't produce as much fry
*they are usually veiltails, and veiltails aren't very "wanted"
*you will often get lower quality bettas because pet store bettas are often "mutts"
*same idea as the color, but with the tail type

You can breed petstore bettas, but it's not recommended, as not many people will want them, and you will/might end up with some bettas which won't find homes.

i have a question deals with the topic though, the veil tails are no longer allowed to show because so many people are breeding them. is the same thing going to happen with crowntails? there are some people in this world(very few.) who breed veil tails that have known history. what about them? im going to breed crowntails eventually myself.

To not be allowed to show VT's is daft imo. They are beautiful bettas and shouldn't be left out simply because they are considered common. I can't see the same happening to CT's.

Pet store bettas are of unknown lineage, unknown age, and unknown genetic factors. Breeding petstore bettas increases the risk of having fry with deformities due to the age of the parents and their unknown genetic backgrounds. It also increases the chance of adding to the population of millions of unwanted "mutt" bettas that are already out there. Its not just the "random color" factor there are a lot of other reasons why its not a good idea to buy pet store bettas.

Actually I do see it happening, with all of these people out there who insist on breeding but can't afford a quality, genetically sound pair from a breeder, but have been told not to breed vts are now turning to breeding cts because they're the second easiest to come accross, and now the ct breeders are having issues selling cts because they're becoming more widely available around the world.

I can actually see that happening. I mean, I can go to Petsmart or Petco here and pick up a CT for 6 bucks. They're getting to be almost as common as VTs

I picked up a ct yesterday at walmart. I paid 5 something for it. A lfs sells them for 4 $.50 more than a vt. Some people set out candles to decorate I set out betta bowls and vases. Walmart has a nice 1 1/2 gallon vase that for 5. a little java moss and some wistera or red temple and it is great addition to any room.

I did not know you could not show VTs in a show. Then again I really have no idea what a beta show is.I only show bunnies

well as far as the show thing is concerned as many of you have said that the show cts won't be showing that much longer, the it will happen with halfmoons and stuff. basically there is no point in breeding for show because they are going to outlaw so many finnage types it won't be funny.
