I have a 36x16x10 freshwater fish tank that and I am having problems adding new fish. Whenever I add new fish they are dead by the next morning.

The tank has a PH of about 6.8, has no ammonia or nitrites and the nitrate is about 10ppm. The tank tested negative for Copper, the KH was 3 drops for 53 ppm and the general hardness was 6 drops for 107 ppm. I use a fluval 2 plus and a Penguin 125 with a bio wheel. I do partial water changes and also change the filter media regularly. I also use Kordon's water conditioner and Kordon's Rid Metals as well as Tetra's Blackwater Extract. The tank has been running continously for over 20 years.

The fish currently in the tank are 2 Silvertip tetras and 9 cory cats, 6 of which are juveniles that where born in the tank 4 months ago. The adult fish in the tank are nearing four years of age. I have not added any new fish for about two years prior to my problems, I was going to switch to a different set-up and was going to let these fish die off naturally before switching to something different. I have not treated for ick or any other diseases in over 5 years. I did move last year but I'm still on the same city water that I was before and I use the conditioner and rid-metals.

I have tried to add Neon tetras on three separate occasions. I would buy them after work in the evening and by the next morning they are dead. I acclimated the last two batches for over an hour and went to two different fish stores just to make sure they weren't a bad batch. They seem fine when I first put them in and I can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas on what the problem is?

Well thats a difficult question.

Bullying from your current tetras? I'm at a loss.

try to put the new fish when you are at home and closely watch them.

Water may have something but I am not familiar with all those water conditioners.

Can you reduce them or not use them for a while?

I thought about buying them in the morning and watching them but I don't really want to experiment with fish that will likely die. As far as the conditioners, they are perfectly safe and are sold in almost every pet store. I am positive those are not the issue.

Maybe try a hardier fish? you can try and put a fish separator in to see if its the water or the existing fish bullying. GL don't give up just yet.

are you acclimatising them long
enough cos if they have been in
RO water and you don't give them long
enough time to acclimatize to your
tank also check what pH they are
coming out of

Is it only neon tetra's you've tried to add or other fish aswell?

I've acclimated the last two batches for an hour and a half each. I let the bag sit in the tank for 15 minutes then slowly add my tank water to the bag. When the bag is full with water I then dump out half of the water and repeat the process.

Well oto's and neons are notoriously weak fish anyway.

Perhaps change stores? If the fish you have in there currently are fine, it's unlikely to be your water quality and more likely to be just bad stock from the shop in the first place.

i think its only nessecary for 20 minutes or more but not much more. neons are also prone to neon tetra disease, not sure about otos though.

I bought the last batch of Neon's from a different store and they died as well.
