Whats The Best To Use

Hi there.....I'm hoping some time this month my 4ft tank will arrive.

I want to do everything right when I set it up. But I can't make up my mind on what to use as a good filtration system.

I want to transfer my 3 discus into the tank and house a few cories, shrimps and maybe some tetras.

I need calm conditions......

I know everyone has some sort of filter system in their tanks as do I but what I want to know is there any on the market that is the bee knees, the best of the best, more superior than any other system.

Alot of people on here will tell you Tetratec. I have to support that as I have bought one now too. If you want the "bees knees" then I still believe Eheim are tops, but you do pay a premium and a lot would suggest they are no better than Tetratec nowadays. I do like the look of the JBL Cristalprofi range, especially the new greenline ones. the E1501 would be great for a tank your size, the flow rates are supposed to be quite accurate, they are whisper quiet and that model uses almost 40% less power than its predecessor. I have a dislike for Fluval as all the ones I ever had were noisy though not everyone has that issue. I also really dislike the new hoses they are using. I would also advise not going for a cheapy like an aqueon or APS but that is just my opinion. Again, any filter will have worked for someone. But at £90 for a brand new Tetratec EX1200 I don't think you would go far wrong and the media you get with it is great.

The cristalprofi I bought was incredibly noisy. It's whisper quiet now that it's boxed up in the garage.

I got an eheim classic instead, very good filter.

I think I will join team tetratec next time though.

Thank you for that info I will check out those brands you mentioned. I was thinking along the line of fluval. One thing I have noticed with all these filters is they are thirsty on power consumption.

I just get the feeling they're a bit more modern and efficient compared to an eheim classic model. I can't fault my eheim, it sits there and filters quietly like it should, but I do like to try new things too.

I have 4 tetratec ex1200 love em, Eheim used to be top dog but i belive they moved from being made in germany to made china they now suffer like everything else made china but still have that german price tag.

The bee knees will be a Fluval G6 but overkill springs to mind

yes it does but it twice the price and its basicly a dustbin with a pond pump in it lol. i would have one if it was not so big i dont know where people put the fx5

Lol so it wouldnt fit in the average aquarium cabinet?

I bought a tetratec ex1200 on BigbruiserAl's recommendation and its ace, bit of a problem setting up but I dont have experience with external's. I would get one of these again in a heart beat
