Whats Eating My Tetras & Nipping Corys :(

Why don't you just stick all the gravel in a *huge* bowl, and then go picking through it all with a spoon, or somethings? :D

I *really* hope that it's not dragonfly larvae or anythings; also, I got dizzy just from *glancing* at those scary pictures!!!!

Wow . . .

Check our filter. Fish have been known to get sucked up/swim into filters. Not sure about the damage to the tails and corys though.

yep. was panic stricken last night when I spotted half a Cory sticking out of the side of my Fluval 4+!!! Wasn't moving, I thought it had ripped his back end off. Quickly unplugged it and casually out he swam. The little #29###! :grr:

Somewhat ironicly, after posting that, I awoke to find two neon tetra and my peppered cory stuck in the filter. None of them survived.

#41####! :rip: :( I have given up on getting any more Zebra Danios! They simply do not seem to want to be in my tank. I have only ever lost two fish, both of which are Zebra Danio, both of which have jumped out of the tank. Lost 2nd one this morning. Found at the back of the tank dried and crispy.

Hello, Right all fish are in the 3ft & extremely surprised to find 1 tetra missing :(
What i did notice was that in the morning when i turned the light on the tetras seemed very stunned & very close to the top of the fluval filter, Not stuck to it or struggling to swim away but like they had been stunned . It took til another fish swam close by before they eventually moved.
Last night no more have disappeared but one of my guppies has his tail quite obviously nipped at.
I've also got sand in that tank which i cleaned thoroughly before re-filling it back up as it was empty & for sale .

Every time i turn the light out at night they all seem stupidly scared & smash into the sides of the tank, All huddle together & dart so quickly, Is this normal?
Must admit they seem more active in the 3ft tank .

All platys, corys seem ok. The corys fins seem somewhat a little better or at least no more damaged than they were.

If you still think its this dobson fly creature is there a particular fish which would eat it, As if it comes into my tank on the plants i bought my mum also bought plants the same day & isn't having this problem but she does have some fish different to me.
So could her fish be eating the insects?
She has clown loach, bgkf ,corys & a kissing gourami in 1 tank, in the other she has mollies, tetras, female fighters & corys. Both tanks with plants from the same shop bought at the same time as mine.

Thanks guys x

Well i have a male bristlenose plec and he is an evil litle ##$#, every feeding time he will chase of and attack everything he comes into contact with, lucky the fish are quick, but he has caused frayed fins on other fish before within the tank....Also you may find these fish are either dying un noticed then decaying under an ornament or wood, then also getting eaten by the live fish...also check you filter systems not sucking them in the intake section

As Sherlock Holmes said, when you rule out all other options whatever you are left with, however unlikely, is the one (or soemthing like that). To go missing in 2 hours is really quick, it would have to be something large enough to see. Also because they all go at night, it would rule out disease as that could be anytime during the day as well and there are always signs, they don't just disappear.

To catch and eat any number of fish in a night would require speed and a large stomach. Most bizarre.

Parhaps there's a gang war and they attack each other?

does anyone living at your house sleep walk? :S

I know rich it's why im confused , the plec isn't big enough imo to eat several a night. None of the other fish ever seem fat unless i've fed bloodworm .

Ive been leaving the light on at night & the last remaining tetra is surviving fine, no nips or anything & the corys fins look better too. I just turn the light off during the day, turn it back on mid afternoon & leave it on at night tut .

mbsqw1d - Nope no sleep walkers here, There is only me & my 4yr old who cant reach either of the 3 tank lids.

I dont know what to do whether to try another lot of tetras or give up on those as i was clearly wasting money, * big sigh *

Filters are checked every 2wks & never found a fish yet, If they were dying & then being eaten fair enough but wouldn't i see them looking a little off, & why would so many disappear & only at night?

I hardly see my pleccy he just hides up the mangrove root most of the time . I've broke my spare heater so now i need to buy another before i can fill up the other tank & i could put pleccy in there & see what happened then.
