I'm trying to decide what I want in my tank but I keep changing my mind! I have an Eheim 2236 external canister filter with a gph of 185. Its going to be planted, but I'm considering going high-tech with it and making it very heavily planted. I really want discus, but I know of their sensitivity to water conditions, and I just don't have time for a high maintenance tank right now. Then I wanted angels and making a nice community out of it. Then I toyed around with the idea of cichlids, and even fancy goldfish. So now I am totally confused and cant decide :shout: My tank is still cycling though so I have plenty of time to decide. What would you do with it?

Dimensions are 48"x24"x13"

I would go with angelfish. They are stunning to watch and interact with eachother. They also come in so many varities. Some large angels with some plants, the a few large schools of tetra.

a pair of green terror cichlids

2nd link shows more of the tank at 25 seconds

Meguro, those fish are beautiful! Can they be in a community or do they have to be species only?

Green terrors are agressive they eat small fish. You can keep them with other larger agressive sa cichlids.

In a 65 gallon you would want them to be species only more or less (maybe 1 convict and/or 1 firemouth, but then only 1 GT instead of a pair).

Only other fish to put them with are target/dither fish (nothing too small) and moderate sized plecs. Loaches and synos have been successfully kept with them too, but the fewer the fish with a GT the better.

edit: they're Gold Saum (or gold edge) Green Terror's in the video. There are also silver edged ones. Also, the linked tank isn't mine, I just found it while looking at tanks on youtube.

I really like the Green Terrors, but I think I want more than just 3 or 4 fish in there. I believe I'll stick with the angel community for now, unless someone suggests something better. :good: Thanks guys!

I think you should get some angelfish as they have really nice personalities and really funny to watch at times.
I would go with clown loaches a shoal of 4-8, a black ghost knife fish, 2 german blue rams, yoyo loaches, kuhli loach 4+, cory's, horse faced loach, ruby shark.
Also shrimps like fan or cherry shrimp, many more types.
these are just suggestions for a community i have had all of these together.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Clown Loaches and BGKs are too big for my tank?

BGK = definitely too big

CL = will outgrow your tank buuuuut they grow extremely slow. it will take years for them to outgrow your tank, at which time you can either upgrade, or sell them for a very high turnover on your investment, and get more small ones.

this is a bomb waiting to go off no offense

clown loaches get 16"+
same with the knife
sharks are usually territorial or get the munchies for tiny fish so loaches go bye-bye
shrimps are thebottomof the food chain here so they wont last long
corys will live cuz they have defenses though

i honestly dont blame you for the clowns and the bgk because people rarley get to see a fully grown specimen.

Agree with the problems mentioned about this suggestion.

1. The clown loaches reach 12-16" and need a bare minimum of 350/400L, although they grow slow you need to make sure they have a big enough tank early enough to ensure their growth isn't stunted.

2. The BGKF can reach 24" although in captivity normally reach more like 18" again need a bare minimum of 350/400L

3. German blue rams require higher temperatures of 28-32 degree celcius making them not ideal for most other community fish that need lower temperatures. Bolivan rams would be a lot better alternative.

4. Horse faced loaches are ok size wise but again need a slightly higher temperature than what is normally considered for a community tank, these loaches need temp between 25-29 celcius.

5. Ruby / rainbow sharks 'can' be aggressive, depending on the nature of the shark. I have one in my 33 gal and its absolutely fine. Admittedly these are not as aggressive as the ret tailed black sharks.

Other suggestions are fine.

Tons and tons and tons of SA cichlids you could do in there. A nice big group of Geophagus Tapajo Red Head would look awesome go for about 7 or so.

Or a good mix suggested by PFK at the moment is Threadfinned Acara and Cupid Cichlids, both occur in a similar place in the wild both are ridiculously stunning! And if you can find B.Wavereni rather than B.Cupido even better.

Could mix them with hoplo or pictus cats and a large school of bleeding heart tetras.

(#63### now I want to do this with my 65)

Also just to add about the suggestion of the Sev above, Ive been asking about one for a while to put in my 65, with a few members saying its a bit on the small side for one. Just thought I would add that
