What types of silcone are safe to use in tanks? Any that they carry at Lowes, Wal-mart, Home Depot, ect.?

Thanks,

Eric

Hi there,

You need to ask this over in the Hardware/DIY section of the forum - there are members over there that build tanks and know about silicone.

buy aquariun silicone, the larger/better fish shops will stock it. don't use anything else, just use the stuff that's specifically for aquariums.

As Miss Wiggle says, you can only use stuff for tanks. Anything else will leach dangerous chemicals into the water that could poison your fish

Be carefull as my local DIY store told my partner the silicone that they sell was fine for aquariums.

It's NOT!!

Luckily I checked with the manufacture who said it would be fatal to use in an aquarium. :/

This is not strictly true. there are many brands which are perfectly safe for use in aquaria that do not state they are for making aquaria. As a result they are considerably cheaper than the brands that aim at fishkeepers. The problem is finding out exactly what is in the cheaper ones.

A search of the DIY forum will give you more information.

My Menards carries aquarium silcone, is a small tube that costs around $3. It says Aquarium Scilicon right on the tube.
