What To Do?

Hi guys,

I have a poorly neon tetra. I think he has pop eye or neon tetra disease from what mr google tells me. It looks like he has a bit of fin rot, he seems to be wasting away, and one of his eyes is huge and grossly deformed. So far I haven't medicated (as I read pop eye and neon tetra disease can't be treated), and I haven't euthanized him because he is still eating well and swimming about ok, just been keeping up with weekly 40-50% water changes and sand vac. Water stats are:

pH 7.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20-40 (hard to read API chart!)

So my problem is this - I am going away for a week on Thursday. What if it dies while I'm away and causes some dodgy water chemistry? Is it better to take him out now or leave him in and hope for the best when I get back? Don't want to take him out if he can survive, but don't want to risk all the fish if he snuffs it while I'm away!

If you were able to quarantine that one neon that would probably be a good step to take.

Unfortunately that's not an option, don't have a hospital tank or the space/money for one (particularly for the sake of one neon). Thanks for replying though
