Hey. I bought 2 Keyhole Cichlids on Monday for my Rio 125. I'm pretty sure one is a male but i'm not too sure about the other one. "It" is slightly smaller and the dorsal and anal fins aren't as long. Anyway, i've had to move this smaller one into another tank to heal as it had a lot of fin rips and i'm thinking about taking it back. I'm not entirely sure why this happened! It's either my dominant male Emperor Tetra, the larger Keyhole or my male Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid. The male Emperor wants to spawn with the females all the time and attacks any other fish that goes near him in there, besides my Bristlenose as he's pretty big and does what he wants. This has resulted in a LOT of fin rips of other fish. Said Emperor did have a brief go at this smaller Keyhole when I first put it in the tank. The larger Keyhole seemed ok with the smaller one most of the time. I did notice them hitting eachother with their fins occasionally. I thought this was a mating thing possibly and it was a she as i've seen my CDC's doing this. Lastly, my male CDC's behaviour has changed since adding the Keyholes. He used to swim around the entire tank and be really friendly but now has set up territory underneath my bogwood. He also flares at the Keyholes when they try to go under there. As I say though, i've not witnessed any obvious fighting. Any suggestions? Is there something about compatibility i've not discovered? Oh for a peaceful fish tank!

If you have seen the Tetra attack the keyhole before it could be him, but it could be the Cockatoo as well. Try rearranging the tank a little and putting the fish back in, but only if it looks really healthy. You might want to let it heal it's fins first. Also, I have noticed new cichlids are either aggressive to new tankmates or the cichlids that are already in there pick on them. However after a couple weeks they will find their pecking order and the fins on the non dominant fish should be able to heal

thats cichlids for you they choose who they want to be with...and boy they do...
