What To Do?

So why is this so illegal? is it a threat ?

Lobsters are ten a penny and lots of other kind of cray fish are caught especially in Scotland whats so special about this one?

Yes I am ignorant and you could tell me I could look it up but I would rather like to be enlightened and warned and told like a tv advert says more than finding out yourself.

Just read the thread and you'll find out why.

Well now that the cat is in the bag...I would tell no one publically, don't release it to anyone, and ask the admin here to delete this thread so no one meta searches this thread and catched you by your MAC address.

Well
Its illegal in this country as only one type is.

But what do they actually do?????

if released into UK rivers it can not only survive but reproduce (given a mate)
it also out competes our naturaly occuring crayfish for food (same as grey squirrels have done to reds)
thus their population is in decline.
additional they harbour a nasty disease called 'crayfish plague' which can wipe out not only crayfish but any
invertibrate in the same river. this has a detrimentyal effect on the rst of the eco system.

as of today still no news from DEFRA, makes you wonder if they are that bothered about this
or wheather they are just to busy ATM.

Yes I looked on another site , so it is safer to be with you and I like the idea of it going to the sea world I can then come and look at it.

at least your not down the local nick

This may be an irrelevant suggestion due to practicality, cost etc, but could it not be exported back to its country of origin, or even to a keeper willing to accept it in a country where it is not illegal? I'm sure it must be possible to achieve, as they are imported in the first place... however I'm assuming the cost would be very high!

Alternatively, not wanting to sound frivolous, you could set up a secret tank somewhere and inform DEFRA you had destroyed the animal. I'm pretty sure the burden of proof would be on them to prove that the animal was still alive.

Also, it may sound really obscure, but it might be worth giving the Citizens Advice Bureau a ring, or attending any free law clinics in your area, as they may be able to advise you of any legal implications if you cannot afford representation.

I hope it all gets resolved satisfactorily on all sides soon.

Silly! They still have to hire the panzerfaust squad, buy all their grenades etc. Plus I'd imagine there's a lot of paperwork needed for the law to turn a blind eye... :p

I presume that instead of 'odd', you mean 'different'. Many countries have different laws.

The UK is odd then... We have thousands of types of crayfish in america. All are legal.

it's because people have been letting all sorts of crays loose in our waters and it's threatening the existance of our own native white clawed cray, the only one that they allow us to import to keep in aquariums is one that can thrive but not breed in our waters should people be irresponsible to let them loose in it!

as usual, the ignorant people that get creatures that they don't know enough to care for over it's entire lifespan spoil it for those of us responsible enough to do research before embarking on unusual tank inhabitants

i hope that made sense, i'm a little 'under the influence' and i've lost any attention span that i had... hehe

Are there any updates on this issue yet, The-Wolf?
I spoke to someone in the fish health department about an unrelated matter and he said he would
speak to the person I sent the email to after the bank holiday.
he did seem to think there wouldn't be a problem for me to rehome the cray with the london aquarium
provided they give me a reciept for it, but it is not his department so he couldn't be certain.

watch this space as they say.

Queer, odd both all mean different... No I literally mean, odd.
that remark smacks of racial overtones and I for one don't appreciate it.

been waiting for an update wolf, hopefully all will be OK :)
