Hey guys.

After my power outage mishap, I managed to save most of the barbs and then I rehomed them with somebody that has a suitable setup for them. Then I picked up 12 black skirt tetras and 5 khuli loaches (I was gonna aim for 6-8, but they only had 6, and the lovely lady at the petstore dropped one and couldn't save it in time) and a BN pleco to accompany my firemouth. I've had them for about 4 days, I think.

I was just sitting here, doing absolutely nothing. Nothing at all, not touching the tank, not feeding the fish, not looking at the fish, just laying in bed. That's it. No new chemicals, water perimeters are fine, did a good water change yesterday, the tank decoration haven't been moved at all

The khuli loaches are very very shy, they only come out of hiding when I'm not moving, and when I do move they zip back into cover.

Anyways.

Laying in bed, doing absolutely nothing, kuhli loach comes out of hiding, but something is different, it zipped around the tank, one end to the other, did swirls up to the top of the tank, then curled up into a ball and was doing flips down to the bottom, did a headstand in the sand, and ultimately it looked almost like it was having a seizure. And now it's just casually exploring the bottom of the tank. It's also nibbling at the sand and shifting it through its gills, which seems a little bizarre.

Now, I've never had loaches before. Or small catfish for that matter. I don't know what their "normal" behavior is, but this most certainly did not seem normal.

I don't think any fish attacked it, unless it was the pleco or another khuli, my firemouth is actually terrified of the loaches, every time they come out he runs away and wants nothing to do with them. But he also does a pretty good job of keeping the tetras out of his logs, which is where the khulis hide. So the tetras couldn't have nipped them either.

I'm really wondering what the hell just happened, why it flipped out, I was sure it was a gonner at the time, my heart skipped a beat, but now it just seems kinda normal. I think.

Any ideas are appreciated. Also, all you nice khuli loach people out there should tell me what to expect from these guys, they're very cute, even with the shyness.

He may have a parasite that is driving him crazy. I just treated for gill maggots  , Ergasilus, in some new clowns I had shipped to me that arrived this morning. They were exhibiting the same symptoms you just described, so I phoned my vet. He prescribed Trichlorfon and diagnosed gill maggots. I am totally Shocked because I had never heard of these buggers before, but he said he has been out on several pond calls to people who have bought infected koi. Apparently, This time of year is bad outbreak time on the fish farms. I am gonna have to go do some research and get back to you on this. Have you heard of this before? Has anybody else recently got infected fish shipped to them? I use liveaquaria and have never had a problem. They have agreed to cover the cost of the meds so I am satisfied with their response.

Watch their gills and see if they are red or if they look like they are really rubbing them on ornaments. My vet said only the heavily farmed fish seem to be a problem. My new clowns stay on the bottom and rub their little gill covers on every corner they can find, then dart around, only to return to desperate :-( gill rubbing. They will be in Q for a long time, looks like. You got your new guys Q'ed?

The only old fish I have in there is the firemouth, so I just stuck them in the main tank, cause my old quarantine tank is occupied by a nasty convict which I'm in the process of figuring out what to do with.

They aren't flashing or rubbing, and this is the first thing I've seen that seemed remotely strange. their gills aren't any redder than they should be. They have a slight blush, but no brighter than any of the photos I see of them online. (they're black khulies, not striped)

I'm kinda doubting on maggots or flukes or anything. But I'll keep an eye out

I just wanted to give you a heads up, as I saw you were in the states, like me, and loaches are a heavily farmed fish. It is something to be aware of, at least.

I hope they are just being silly little entertaining boogers for you,and doing what our fish seem to do best, make us crazy with worry! :good: :shout:

My Kuhlis love swimming around in the tank, even with the light on. I try to turn the lights on while it is still sunny or at least very light outside. Otherwise they freak out when I turn the light on after they've been in darkness for a while. Then they dart and zip around, and quite obviously are in distress.

At times they will take a break from all their dancing and hide under the decorations in their tank.

Your Kuhlis will soon enough get used to your presence, and not mind you walking in front of their tank anymore.

Does it sound to you like maybe it was startled by something?

Yeah, I'll keep an eye out for it. But there's no flicking or gasping or heavy breathing or anything.

Turning on the light when it's been dark hurts their eyes I think. And yes, when I use the cupboard doors on their stand, it can startle them, and they'll hide! Is that what you're asking?

I've never had any fish like this before, nothing long in body shape or a loach at all, so the crazed behavior was certainly not something I've ever seen before. At least, not in that fashion. Like I said, i wasn't doing anything with the tank, or even watching it until I saw the craziness out of the corner of my eye.

I do also have my TV right next to the fish tank, often playing a TV show of documentary of the sorts as background noise while I browse the net or crochet or the like. I'm never really even watching it, It's just background noise, quite literally. Do you think maybe some noise from the television coulda freaked it out? I can easily move it if that's the case.

That could very well have been it, loud noises, light flashes from the TV! I would watch the Kuhlies when loud noises are coming from the TV, or see if the behaviour happens again for no apparent reason. Maybe it does have a parasite it is bothered by!

I'm gonna take my convict out of her 20 and totally change all her decorations and put the khulis in the tank with her, and hopefully she won't be a ***** about it. Give it a few weeks, and see if anything is wrong. first time trying loaches and I already feel like I did something wrong. I hope this doesn't turn into a huge problem.

Have a look at this link: http://tropicalfishandaquariums.com/Compatibility/index.php
It says convicts are not compatible with Kuhli Loaches. Maybe there are members here who could advise you better on this.

to be honest, kuhlis move pretty wierdly anyway - its funny to watch for me as they wiggle around the tank... they are very timid though and can be scared by so little as just opening the lid!

It sounds more like the Khuli was just doing what they do, they go really mental when there are storms about as they have swim bladders that are enclosed in a boney case towards the front and the rear section that is rudimentry at best, making them very aware of atomspheric changes. There intestines work like a secondary respiratory system and they will often come to the surface to breath. It may seem odd but the more cover you give the khulis in the form of plants and structure the braver they will become. They are truly one of the most peaceful unassuming fish available in the same league as Corydoras. Also when you can give them some more friends, khuli's adore being in a group and with more about they will all get that but braver.
