Hi All,

Been a long time reader of this forum but I need some of your knowledge now =)

I've been trimming the plants in my tank today and I've found a few of these alive & dead.

Does anyone what *fly family this is & how to get rid of them (I have Platy fry in the tank)

Thanks in advance.

Paul

it's a dragon fly...it has probably been in your tank for some time. They start off as nymphs.

have a look here

Thanks ianho,

The tank is only 5 months old, but I guess they came on the plants when I bought them even though I soaked & rinsed the plants before.

Is there anything I can do to kill any nymphs left?

Holy crap if I saw one of them in my room I'd be first out the window

Hehe, It was tricky catching the flying ones in the fish net and not letting it escape in the room.

Lucky animals like these don't freak me out =)

It's a damsel fly. Dragon Fly rest with their wings outstretched perpendicular to their bodies and Damsel Fly rest with their wings along their bodies. Damsel Fly are smaller than Dragon Fly. The nyphs of both are carnivorous but Damsel Fly nymphs because of their smaller size only eat small creatures although fish fry could be prey to them but only when small and are probably in no more danger from these than from other fish.

Since they need to fly off and mate I would think that the population would die out naturally as they are in a captive environment.

Thanks for the information, I've only had to get one more out the tank since monday, one of the Danio's was swimming around with it in his mouth just like a dog with a bone =)
