Tomorrow i will be getting hopefully 6 yellow labs for my 29gal.

I want to know what else i can have in there with them. I know there isnt a whole bunch of room for more, but some.

I was thinking of a trio of some type of Loach, Yo Yo Botia?
One Pictus Cat?
Maybe cories?

Please tell me how many and of what i can keep! B)

Thanx,
Wolf

Hi :) ,

Loaches.....This can be done.

I put three clown loaches in with my Mbuna, however I have decided that I am moving them out. The only reason for this is because of feeding difficulties......Mbuna eat a strictly vegetarian diet, whereas Clown loaches are carnivores and need a decent supplement of meaty/fatty foods (bloodworm etc.) If the Mbuna were to eat any of this regularly they would no doubt end up with the infamous Malawi Bloat and die. I therefore felt it not fair to deprive the loaches of their staple diet nor put the Mbuna at risk of Bloat.

Cories.....No.

Cories are a smaller fish and no doubt will end up being be bullied to death by the larger, more aggressive Mbuna.

Pictus.....can be done.

The only thing I would say about this is, firstly, your Labs will have to be of a fair size (3" +) before you can put Pictus in. Pictus are predatory and will eat any fish small enough to fit into their mouths.

Secondly, if your Labs are at a large enough size, I would get at least 3 pictus. They prefer to be in groups.

May I suggest (which is what I a now going to go with) Synodontis Mulitpuctatus (sp?), otherwise known as cuckoo catfish. These are very often kept happily with Mbuna but again should be kept in groups of at least 3.

Obviously, all of the above is dependant on the size of your tank. 29 gallon is not huge but should happily house your 6 yellow labs and 3 of either the loaches, pictus or multis.

Hope this helps.

Mbuna eat a strictly vegetarian diet

Actually, most mbuna are ominvorous to some degree or another. Very few are actually strictly vegetarian (tropheops are one of the few). Labidochromis, however, are actually insectivores, and not vegetarians at all - they share a similar diet to Aulonocara and many smaller haps.

The synodontis is a very good recommendation, Raphaels will work well too. Pictus should be ok. Cories are will not work.

So yeah id really like to do Pictus cats,

SO u guys are sayin' id be good in my tank with 3 pictus, and 6 labs? in a 29.
Obviosuly making sure the labs are of a good size.

you could add some loaches any kinds..most preferrably clown loaches...you can put any types of plecs...If your just getting yellow labs then you could put any community fish with them as long as they are not small enough to fit on the labs mouth.... :D

Cloan Loaches in a 29?...

Im not even sure the Pictus will work... Ive read they need pretty big tanks?
Man im gettin confused...

Wolf

Clown loaches in a 29gal is not good in the long term, they will eventually need a much bigger tank.

3 Pictus should be OK, they only grow to 5 inches max.

However pictus do enjoy lots of swimming space so this could be why a large tank is recommended. If you wnat cats, doras (raphaels) are good, plecos, synos are good, most loaches although wouldnt recommendc pakistani or skunk loach.
THinking practically syno multiple punctatus is just right but can be expensive for a nice specimen, maybe consider synodontis flaviatus?

I have Syno eupterus in the Mbuna and so far so good ....also a Sailfin Plec. I tried Clown loach...but this was a disaster - of the Ich variety. I really wanted Pictus too but last time I had these they ate several small fish over night and died the next day with very extended bellies - they are also very lively and I believe need a big tank if they are to be kept in the numbers which makes them happy !

Good luck with your choices :D

Well i got 8 yellow labs! ill post sumthin in tropical chit chat! :D

Im still thinkin of what to put with them

Maybe you can keep upside-down cats with the labs? I'm sure I've seen that somewhere...

8 yellow labs in a 29gal?? They grow to 4 inches each.....thats 32 inches of fish....going by the inch per gallon rule thats pretty much all the fish you can have...I know that mbuna fish prefer to be overstocked however you aren't planning on having a strictly mbuna tank.....

UNLESS you are planning on getting a larger tank later.

People always seem to under estimate the need of mbuna cichlids. I frequently watch my yellow labs chase each other from one end of my 75gal (4ft) tank to the other...I cannot imagine them in a smaller tank.....

ya i totally know thats pretty much it for stocking. And i kinda got a couple more then i wanted from the place i got them from. When they get full size i will get rid of a few.

As for the "other fish" all was thinking about is a bottom fish. Some type of scavenger/algea type guy. Like one of those plecs that dont get really big or sumthin.

;) Hey there,

If you want a bottom dwelling algae eater that's smaller than a pleco, go for a Chinese algae eater or an Otocinclus Catfish!

:p
