Hi, I am thinking of buying a generator for back up incase of any power cuts so at least i can keep my aquarium going. What size kv generator will i need to keep my aquarium going if we do have a power cut.

My tank is an aqua one regency 100 (220L)
2 x 30w T8 tubes (although only ever have one on at a time)
300w eth external heater,
twin airpump,
fluval 306 filter

Cheers Colin

Hello Colin

Do you suffer a lot with power cuts of long duration up there?
The reason I ask is that I have read that people on other forums have bought and use computer type UPS to good effect.
It could be that a decent spec UPS might be cheaper than buying a rather noisy generator and far easier to install.

To be honest, unless you're prone to power cuts of 12hrs+, I wouldn't worry about it. Your money would be better spent investing in some blankets to wrap around your tank if it does happen.

I think you have answered your question yourself viking. You have listed the wattage of each thing that you wish to run. Just add them up and you will have the rating of generator needed in watts. 1000 watts is a kilowatt, just in case you didn't already know that. Voltage is a different matter. The voltage that you use all the time is the one you will need in your emergency generator.
