My old betta died and now i am looking for another betta. it has to be a male ( don't want babies )i really want one but can't decide on is breed or color. can anyone give me advice? i have a two gallon bowl with a cover.

Sorry to hear about your old Betta

How long did you have him?

To me, the white half moon male bettas always catch my eyes. If I were to get a betta, I would run to the pet store and purchase myself a white male. That's just me, I could stare a white betta for hours. (Teehee :D my eyes would burn.) I'm for the half moons, myself. Petco has mixes of breeds/species, and they're shapes and colors are VERY impressive.

I would have to agree, I love my white Betta and would not swap him for any other colour :)

Also it took me a while to find him as none of my pet stores sell anything but Blue or Red Betta's.

2 Gallon... Minus the filter, heater, substrate and any decoration. Wow... about 4 litres of water then.

i had him for 2 months. he died of a mix of dropsy and fungal infection. building his bubble nests was the only thing he would ever do.

This 2 gallon bowl - does it have a filter and a heater?

Unless you live in a country with very warm weather, bettas need a heated tank, and a temperature of around 25C.
And like all other fish bettas do better with a filter. It is possible to keep them in an unfiltered tank, but this requires daily water changes. I wouldn't keep mine in an unfiltered tank.

The reason I asked how long you had him was because IMO a 2 gallon tank is to small to keep any fish. I would assume this "could" have been the reason he got ill and died.

Why not look into buying a larger tank to keep a Betta in? maybe a 5-10 gallon. He would be much happier in the long run :good:

With regards to the possible new betta, what about just going down to the store and take the one that feels right, regardless of fins or colour? One that catches your eye, perhaps one that's particularly sick (and you feel you can help, I wouldn't do this if you hope for future tankmates though, especially if it's something that they could catch), flares or seems almost as if they're 'interested' in you.

My favorite bettas to buy are the ugly miserable king bettas (I know, that sounds bad...)...after being in a healthy tank they always turn out beautiful for me...and they are always paying attention to me and are so aware of what goes on outside the tank...for all the bettas I've owned, kings are my favorites and have had the cutest personalities...

But I would not put one n a bowl...I have a 2 gallon bowl, much to my dismay that I use...bu it's for a small female veilteil (I think) and I keep the water VERY CLEAN and it is warm enough here that the water stays a warm tempurature (this time of year it can get warmer than 120-130 degrees)...more often than not I have to cool them down with ice cubes haha :) but especially for a king betta and any male, I would never want to put them in a bowl...if you can, I would suggest buying at least a 5 gallon tank with a heater and filter (I use an internal bubble filter because anything else I found is too strong for bettas without having to baffle it)....you will be extremely rewarded by ho much of a difference it will make on any betta you get...they have so much mor character (in my opinion) and their colors and fins will become more beautiful :)

Just get the betta that you get "that feeling" about...and if you don't get that feeling that "THIS IS THE ONE" I would just be patient and wait until the right one comes along...I have done that the last few times and am SO happy I did... :)

Good luck! :good:

my king betta wasnt ugly or miserable.. well miserable yes cus he wants a friend on the other side of the divider to flare at but until i find the whole i can put any one in with him, But he is a big teddy bear and he is always aware of what im doing

Hannahbear77, I think most king bettas are beautiful! I just like to buy them "ugly" as in their fin are ragged and thei color is almost gray...like an unhealthy ugly...and once th are in my tank for a little whle, their fins grow and they color up nicely... :look: Sorry I should have clarified...I meant an unhealthy ugly, no ugly in general  (but ifi saw a truly ugly one I liked I'd still get it)

Jasmeena, are you keeping the bowl or upgrading? Does it have a heater? If you don't have a filter, then what's you water change schedule on it?

Good luck, jasmeena! Let us know what happens! :)
