What Is This White Stuff Floating.....

hey MG. (Is that a make of car?) I wonder if you'll get it after another 100 guesses!? :fun: sorry, it's as simple and boring as my initials. the sqw1d part is squid, misspelt and actually our band name.. 'mbsqw1d' follows me everywhere on the internet!

These protein skimmers are intrueging.. Wiki says 'Protein skimming is the only form of filtration that physically removes organic compounds before they begin to decompose'. So shouldn't we all have one as standard?

I've actually just got back from lfs with 5 red finned tetra. My poor solitary Dwarf Gourami is now sulking and trying his best to keep them off his turf! Did did head down there with the intention of getting a Pleco but they didn't have any brislte noses and the ones they did have wouldve easily outgrown my tank.
These tetra seem to swim crooked and at an angle at times, as if theyve got swim bladder problems, well I hope not!

Hows your relationship developing with your fish and tank? oh, and your neighbour!?

Protein skimming will remove the oily film on top of tanks, but ONLY in a marine tank. Neither of you keep marines in your tank so the skimmer won't work (it's to do with water density, bubble size and salt levels, but you probably don't want to know the details...). The film is fatty residues from your food in most cases, and nothing too much to worry about unless surface agitation in low and hence oxygen cannot get in properly... All you can really do is increase surface agitation to clear it in a fresh water tank :good:

All the best

Just thought I would close this thread down by confirming what others have noted here. After adding an airstone to the tank and running it for only an hour or two a day, all trace of this white stuff is gone.

Thanks all y'all for the help.... :thanks:

iv got this problem, and mine started after i removed the carbon from my filter, and replaced it with new, from the beginning i thought my tank had hit a bacteria bloom, but then after doing some research,i have come to think its got something to do with the fat in the food, before i found this out iv only gone and ordered a new filter,im changing from a filter i got from all pond solutions,to a fluval fx5,does anyone run 1 of these if so i wouldnt mind some backfeed thanks in advance

You might be better off starting a new thread in the 'Hardware and DIY' section of the forum; you'll get more replies that way.
