What Is The Capacity Of My Tank? Edit

sorry lol i did try but ill let you guys figure it out as i tried and failed
scot :good:

Can i see a pic of the entire tank ( so i can shee the shape and size?). I am going to assume its a 20 g flat hex, as i havent seen a flat hex any bigger than 20g's. The fish in the first pic is a Yellow Lab. The fish in the second one looks like a Botia.

Sorry Paul, this has confused me even further!

From front to clockwise; 27.5" x 6" x 28" x 36" x 28" x 6".

Front: 27.5"
Diagonal: 6"
Side: 28"
Back: 36"
Side: 28"
Diagonal: 6"

Length from front to back - 15"
side to side - 36
Height - 16.5

I agree with you on the "side to side" but the "front to back" can't only be 15" if the side straight pieces of glass are 28" on their own!

Give me a few ticks, i'll take the top of it and measure it properly. Theres not much gap between the back of the tank and the wall so ive probably measure the lid. Ive got a one year old running around so its not too easy to do this. Bare with me

Ignoring your "15" front-to-back measurement as incorrect...

It's easier to chop the tank into regular sections.

So first we have the back rectangular section of tank, (ie. the volume of the tank from the back towards the front up to the point where the slanted sides start):

(LxWxH) = 36" x 28" x 16.5" = 273L

Now we just have the front of the tank to deal with. This can be thought of a central rectangle of water that goes from the front flat piece of glass, and is projected backwards to the line where the slanted sides finish, and two triangular columns of water on each side. The only issue is we don't know the distance from the front of the tank to where the slanted sides stop, so we need to calculate it.

The total tank length is 36", and the front flat section is 27.5". So what is left (allowing for slight measurement errors) is 8.5", split between the 2 triangular sections.
So now we know that each triangle is 4.25" from the edge of the straight front glass to the edge of the tank.
So each triangular column is 6" on the diagonal, 4.25" across the tank, but an unknown distance from front to back.

The formula for calculating the diagonal on a right angled triangle is: z = sqrt(x^2 + y^2)
Shuffle it around a bit:
z^2 = x^2 + y^2
z^2 - y^2 = x^2
Sqrt(Z^2 - y^2) = x

So we can drop in our numbers:

sqrt(6^2 - 4.25") = 4.23"

Triangular sections (as there are 2) can be added together and worked out like a regular rectangle, so you effectively have three rectangular sections:

Rear Tank Capacity: (36" x 28" x 16.5") = 273L
Front Tank Capacity: (27.5" x 4.23" x 16.5") = 31L
Triangular section (x2) Capacity: (4.5" x 4.23" x 16.5") = 5L

Gives a total of 273+31+5 = 309L (68.1 Imp. Gal / 81.7 US Gal)

As a double check, if the entire aquarium was rectangular it would be:

36" x 32.23" x 16.5" = 314L
subtract the volume of the 'missing triangles' (the bits cut off the tank) 5L :

314L - 5L gives 309L (68.1 Imp. Gal / 81.7 US Gal)

So based on your measurements, (ignoring the presumed incorrect front-to-back measurement I make your tank around 300L :good:

applause for the mathmatician!!!!! hes better than my teacher!

im no geek im just well presented. i used pythagourous to work out the corners. as there equalateral triangle you split them down the middle for a right angled triangle

i can work this out. i need lengths of each of the 6 sides. a length from fornt to back and side to side and i need height i then can work it out using trigonometry and pythagoeum

Ok, its really hard measuring this, even without the top on.

Front panel to clockwise
27.25 x 6 x 10.75 x 34.25 x 10.75 x 6

front to back is 36.5"

Like i said, its real difficult and they may be out a slight fraction.

Someone earlier said thatit sounded like a 20 gallon (100 litre) tank. Well, the tank that sits next to this is a 20 gallon and the new tank is definately bigger.

thanks Paul, in that case see the posts above :)

LOL you may aswell be talking portugese! Now if you want to talk sole colours of my Christian L's Im your lady, but angles/corners? Fair play!

thanks Paul, in that case see the posts above :)

So I have a 300 litre tank? For free? With the cupboard to suit? Man that is cool!!!!
The plan is to move my fish from the 100 litre to this one and sell the yellow chilchid and plecs. My fish are gonna look tiny in there!! I think ill be researching new fish!!!
Im putting a crayfish in my 100 litre.
