Not many fish medicines are available where I live. Just got simple Anti-Fungal and Anti-Ich medicines. I read about Melafix, seems to be a pretty useful thing. I also read on some website that Melafix is just dilute Eucalyptus oil. Is this true? coz I can surely get Eucalyptus oil from somewhere...

Any other useful chemicals/herbs/etc... that I can use to treat fish diseases?

Thanks in advance for the info

not true
melafix is made from tea tree oil.

Hi akudewan :)

MelaFix is made from Melaleuca alternifolia, which is tea tree oil. It's available from health food stores in a 100% pure form, which is what you will want to use.

It can be used as a mild antibacterial agent and it often helps if you use it as soon as signs of a bacterial infection are apparent. It seems to me that if it is going to help the condition at all, it usually does it quickly.

Take care to dilute it properly before adding it to your tank because it is strong and can burn the fish, and when using it do frequent water changes, adding more if necessary.

Here's a link that has information about it including directions for diluting it with water to make a MelaFix equivalent:

When using Melafix be very careful if you apply other treatments at the same time as I have had a really bad experience when I put Melafix , Tap Safe and Liquisil in the same tank at the same time.
It nearly killed my entire tank - I had the worst water ever and had to do a 80% water change just so the poor things could see and werent stressed out.
Be warned

EDIT - I use Tapsafe and Liquisil all the time so it must have been the reaction with Melafix

Thanks a lot, all of you. :)

I'll try and get tea tree oil at some health store, and make my own "melafake"

Don't underestimate plain rock salt as an effective medicine. Also copper coins have been used to treat disease.

This sounds like a good topic for a new thread, do you mind if I make a "Homebrewed Medicines thread"?
