What Is A Reasonable Credit To Ask For

i've got about 25 peppered corys that i'm going to take to my lfs what kind of credit should i ask for.

My mate marks all his livestock up by 100% so try and ask for 50% of what they are selling their young cories at, bronze and pepperd are usually same price.. they should do a deal at 50% because they will also make at least 100% on what ever product you eventually use your credit note for..

Good luck in finding a shop that will give you credit. I only managed to find one shop that would give me credit, and they wanted to give me 50p per 2" L144, which they'd sell for at least 10x.

I've heard that a decent shop will give you around 1/3 of how much they sell them for.

But of course most will try to rip you off.

There is ripping you off and there is what the fish are actually worth... if a shop can get them in cheaper... why should they give people lots of credit for their fish?

From the shops perspective..:

-unknown source... you can only take the customers word for the tank size/parameters/conditions they've been kept in/fishes age etc...
-have they been exposed to any diseases/treated with medications etc
-where were the parents sourced? same tank at some shop? justr how inbred might the babies be?
-can get them much cheaper else where and actually make some kind of profit on them...

(yes....as shocking as it is, shops do need to make a fair profit on fish to not only cover costs, make money and leave a budget left over to buy more fish! as odd as that may sound... it is called a business...)

Most shops buy fish from reliable sources after a lot of research and these sources have had to prove themselves adept and are themselves licensed...

You cant seriously expect to make money selling fish small scale or there would be loads of people making money like this...


I reckon 25 peppered cories are worth about £5, maybe double that. Depends on a lot.

It's not peppered corys, but my lfs will give me £1 for young bn's and they sell them for around £4-£5... It depends on the availability of the fish in question.

my lfs will give me £2 a fish for bristlenose and generally will give a third of what the fish would sell for but every shop will be different.

Difference is... Bristlenose cost a fortune to import... corys (the more common ones anyway) really dont...

Easy way to tell if someone has imported bristlenose?... They are retailing a 1-2" fish at £10+... its not worth selling them if they are going to be that price...

Loads of people breed bristlenose in large quantities purely for the enjoyment of watching them grow and dont expect loads of credit for them or just want more food to keep the hoards going!

I haven't bred them, the guy that sold me a pair told me. I would love to see them breed. I love to see anything breed, even platties and swordtails. lol.

Livebearers are worth even less to most LFS than cories! Anything that is easy to breed is generally very easy to obtain at low prices from a supplier...

Now L number plecs, Bristlenose, Kribensis, Rams, dwarf cichlids and stuff like that are worth more...

Im not sure which i hate more, people asking if i will give credit for baby guppies (that are generally really drab colours with horribly crooked spines) or people begging me to take baby Convict Cichlids or Jewel Cichlids!!!

Why breed a species and keep the babies alive knowing no one wants them *bashes head*... shop... not rescue shelter!

Exactly lol. Especially when people breed species like Kissing Gouramis, Bala Sharks, which very few people can house properly.

I got credit only once, I took some fish back and got some Botia Kubotai I got about 25% of the original price. Some stores don't do it altogether.

yes will probably do this,i thought people bred fish as they enjoy the challenge of raising fry and at the same time helps them fund their hobby
