What Is A Reasonable Credit To Ask For

Any reputable aquatic store should be able to offer a credit note on healthy live stock, especially if you are a regular customer. And many of us are.
Young peppard corries sell in my area for £2.25 if they are worth £5 credit which chances are you will spend on a £5+ tub of food that as actually cost the retailer £2 probably less than that.
He then sells your fish for £56.25 and corries sell pretty fast in my view.

The retailer is then actually taking £61.25 on an expediture of £7.00

I know business is business but where else can you make that sort of proffit at 875%

There is ripping you off and there is what the fish are actually worth... if a shop can get them in cheaper... why should they give people lots of credit for their fish?

From the shops perspective..:

-unknown source... you can only take the customers word for the tank size/parameters/conditions they've been kept in/fishes age etc...
-have they been exposed to any diseases/treated with medications etc
-where were the parents sourced? same tank at some shop? justr how inbred might the babies be?
-can get them much cheaper else where and actually make some kind of profit on them...

(yes....as shocking as it is, shops do need to make a fair profit on fish to not only cover costs, make money and leave a budget left over to buy more fish! as odd as that may sound... it is called a business...)

Most shops buy fish from reliable sources after a lot of research and these sources have had to prove themselves adept and are themselves licensed...

You cant seriously expect to make money selling fish small scale or there would be loads of people making money like this...

A certain shop in Hull I know make a killing on accepting 2nd hand stock from customers. Both livestock and dry goods. In fact around 30 - 40% of their stock is 2nd hand / traded in for credit.

In fact without this 2nd hand trade I doubt they would still be going.

Its just like Game or Gamestation accepting games for 10% of their market value from customers. As long as their are people out there willing to trade in stuff even for small rediculous amounts of money there will always be unscrupulous business owners looking to make a quick profit from them.

Im not saying all shops are the same, just saying why you might not get the credit you think your beloved fish are worth!

Wont say i dont give credit for fish, depends what they are, their condition and whether they will sell on. I have to treat them as fish i would make a normal mark up on and give credit to the value i would pay for them elsewhere *shrug*. I got caught out myself with my own Liverock tbh >.<

Being a regular customer is something else and changes the perspective of the shopkeeper a lot... but just on a generic shop basis... as i said...

You wouldnt believe how... naieve people can be... I had someone get stroppy because he bought in a 20cm Pangasius and wanted a lot of credit for his 'top quality shark' (it was very thin and almost battered enough to eat!). Why would I want to take on a Pangasius? I cant justify selling it to ANYONE. Well, i have one customer with a tropical pond on the way because the loon now has a pair of arapaima but he is gonig to whole mad hog and why would he want pangasius? The bloomin fish is now in imacculate condition and at least 10cm bigger in 3 weeks. I've written in flourescent pink "NOT FOR SALE - HE GETS TOO BIG FOR YOUR TANK!!" and i have no idea of what will become of him when he outgrows his tank!

I get people wanting to bring in livebearers (despite me saying i get my livebearers from one supplier only to prevent mixing fish who have been exposed to different diseases etc). I have people bring in Common Plecs and Sailfin Plecs by the bucketfull and its getting to a point where they are gonig to get turned away because we have so many! People turning up with goldfish and koi who get furious when i refuse to take them and they then ave to be escorted out to make sure they dont get dumped on the system as KHV and other nasties become a horrible possibility. And oscars... dont get me started on oscars... People wanting credit for big manky oscars with hole in the head!

It wasn't a personal attack or advice to avoid your LFS, just maybe an opinion 'from the dark side' that you might not have thought of otherwise?

It takes time to get to know a customer and to work out just how much of a muppet they are

i take it with some of your comments,you own a fish shop,so have experienced some people asking for credit?

I dropped in 4 silver dollars into a LFS last saturday, they came with a second hand tank I purchased and I wasn't prepared to keep them as they grow too big for the tank they come with and as it was they were big enough and I like planted tanks and I didn't want them eating everything. I received a call today to say the woman in the shop had sold them at £7.50 each and I could come in and collect the money. Quite surprised they went for that much to be honest.

I would love to say i own in LOL but i deal with the fish side of things in the shop i work in...

I think i jinxed myself, had a customer get stroppy because he found someone selling a load of 'large catfish' off cheaply and he thought he'd sell them on to me for credit or swaps. He offered me a 'very good deal' for an 18" Giraffe Catfish and an even bigger Tiger Shovelnose, i've probably lost a customer because i had to say no chance! (both fish i love as well)
