What Is A Powerhead?

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm getting an eheim external filter and hydor external heater next week and have read many times on different threads that people recommend a powerhead.

What exactly is a powerhead? is it an accessory for your filter? is it a totally seperate piece of equipment that does it's own job?

Does it filter the water in any way? or does it basically suck in water and pumps it out to increase ariation in the water?

Also where abouts in the tank is it recommended? top, middle or bottom of tank?

I plan to have a spray bar with the eheim, so what size powerhead would you recommend so that the fish are not disturbed too much.

Any advice would be great

Powerheads are ideal to run your undergravel filter system or simply give extra circulation within the tank.


if you have the spray bar you should be fine with only that

you can also use one on its own by sticking it on the side of your tank and letting it blow water across the tank and if you like it can also suck air in through a tube and disperse it throughout your tank.

A powerhead is a pump used to increase flow in a tank,
it can increase aeration if it is used near the surface of the tank to create a ripple that intern allows better exchange of gases.
it can be attached to a filter to provide extra filtration if needed.
