What Is A Common Pleco?

A woman near me is selling off her plecos. I asked what kind they were, and she replied saying they are "common plecos"..... but surly they will have a more scientific name than just 'common'?! I am assuming these are the ones the shops sell which grow much larger than anybody can really home?

Common plecos are usually either Hypostomus plecostomus or Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps

Sigh, this IMGTFY is so over used lol. Yes thank you, i did google it before asking! But still did not get the exact answer i was looking for - most aquatic shops sell 'pleco £4.50" and thats it!! Could be anything, even a golden nugget plec!!!

Now thats a more useful answer Looks like i will not be touching them then as i do not want a foot long fish in my tank haha!
