My sorority tank is on my desk, so pretty much in constant view. Even when the tank lights are off I can easily see the girls and sort of do the odd head count sub consciously through out the day.

Yesterday evening all 6 girls were just fine, no signs of illness, no aggression.
In the time it took me to go and unwrap an lasagne and put it in the oven Pixie died.
There was no signs of anything on her body, checked water stats and they are same as always at Ammonia 0; Nitrite 0; Nitrate ~10.
They're in 13.5Gal with a Cyclone Cy-20 filter, several Amazon swords, quite a bit of vallis, some watersprite and a piece of bogwood with some java moss on it.

How the heck did she just die like that?

Not knowing her age, i cant say for sure she was old, but just keep a close eye on the others for any disturbing signs, abnormailities etc.

Sorry for your loss :/

how old was she...? she might have had a "gas" bubble stuck in her that caused her to fail :( i am so sorry for your loss

Unfortunately sometimes they just pass on for no reason that we can see, it's hearbreaking and frustrating not knowing if there was something that you could do to help, but im sure there was nothing you could have done, Im sorry for your loss *hug*

She was only a young one 9 months if that.
I've not heard of them getting a "gas bubble stuck" - you're going to have to enlighten me on that one.
All my bettas are given a starve day, a pea day and a variety of hikari micro wafers, hikari bio gold, attison betta pellets, betta pro flake, finely chopped prawn and mussel, frozen/live bloodworm, daphina, brine shrimp and anything else I give to the community tank.

There is a disease called "gas bubble disease." Not sure if that is what the other poster meant. Do you ever have bubbles on the side of your tank after doing water changes? If not, then your betta probably didn't have that problem. It's not that common.

Sorry to hear about your betta.

I had actually heard of bettas "ingesting" too much air during a feeding frenzy of food at the surface...they are fine for a bit but the pressure ends up doing them in

Nope, no air bubbles on the tank, isn't that usually when filling a new tank? This one's been up and running for a few months with mauture media taken from the original community tank fillter.

As for feeding frenzy, not unless it was from the previous day as they usually get fed around 9.45-10pm a short while before lights out. She didn't look bloated or swollen in any way.

Just odd...

You can still get the bubbles if you pour a pitcher of water into the tank. I did that once and bubbles formed. It's very easy to prevent though and sounds like that wasn't the problem.

Unfortunately fish like other animal, humans included. Suffer from heart attacks, kidney failure etc.

So maybe if the death was that quick it may have been due too heart failure :(

Sorry about the loss.
