What fish of yours get along but wouldn't usually?

My Opaline Gouramis pair gets along fine with my angel pair.

Yeah I know, but I'm just saying.

What made you even try and put them together in the first place is the real question?

WEll, I currently have two gourami (golden I think...) with a pair of spotted climbing perch. And they say you shouldn't mix anabantinoids.

Saying that I used to keep a host of guppies, this pair of gourami and my first betta in a tank together with no problems.

Probably my oddest combination (for me) was keeping Pictus with Guppy fry. Amazingly most of the fry survived...

I found black skirts to be quite docile and harmless imo. They only bicker amongst themselves but left my female betta and guppies alone completely.

I use a huge female Oranda Goldfish named Dympna ("Dympna" means "patron st. of the mentally ill" by the way) to babysit my livebearer fry. She could probably inhale them on accident, but so far they've been very safe with her. Her other tankmate is a tiny male feeder guppy--aside from the fry, he's the only fish that never picks on her. Dympna's kind of pathetic.

I also kept several kuhli loaches in an African cichlid tank, once. Far from being picked on, I actually had one Powder Blue male who would guard them like they were his fry. He would stand watch over their cave during the day to make sure that nobody messed with them. During the night, the Kuhli loaches would all decide to explore opposite ends of the tank, and the poor guy kept trying to keep track of them all at once. I don't think he ever got much sleep.

My parents - without first asking for advice - put 2 angels, 2 pearl gourami's, and a few guppys in a 60L tank together.

The angels and gourami's seem to have settled down now, but the guppy's are gone. -_-

She has been better informed now
