From the photos I would say male. It has long dorsal and anal fins, and there are elongated rays on the edges of the tail. Females tend to have shorter, more rounded dorsal and anal fins and they don't usually have the extended rays on the tail.
These fish have several colours and fin shapes created by selective breeding. Yours is probably one bred for longer fins.
Yes do not keep fish in bowls period.. I've learned from this mistake. Though labyrinth fish (they breathe air) and do not technically need an air pump of any kind, does not mean it isn't right to keep it in a stagnant bowl. Is this bowl cycled?
