What Fish Is This?

I saw this fish in one of the huge tanks in the O2 centre on finchley road London. It was sucking up the substrate and puffing it out of its gills!

Possibly Leporinus fasciatus ("Banded Leporinus"), a member of the headstander family?

Cool. I'd just never seen that sucking up sand and puffing it out of the gills behaviour before. Very cool! Didn't know the gill structure/anatomy allowed for it!

Cool, I went to the O[sup]2[/sup] centre in Finchley Road a few years ago and I saw this exact same fish there. Its a nice tank, looks a bit marine-y.

Both of those tanks look very marine-y! I'm at uni opposite the O2 so i pop in there a lot after clinic hours for a drink or two...

The other tank is absolutely chock-full of yellow labs now, they've bred furiously!

Don't really think the marine scape suits it, a heavily planted scape would look way better

Totally agree. Although, i don't know much abut cichlids but don't they wreck planted scapes?!

Plus just whacking in some sand and a bunch of rocks = minimum maintenance.
