im looking to buy an external filter for my 350l tank this weekend and wondered which to buy?

Which is best?

also at the moment im running 2 x fluval u4's. would i just hook up the external and leave all 3 running untill the new one is cycled?

I have a Eheim 2073 on my 200 liter tank along with a JBL External and bot are very good.The 2073 can handle a 350 liter tank but you might be better going for the bigger 2075 http/www.aquatics-online.co.uk/catalogue/eheim-professionel-3-filters.asp

would i run it along side my internals for a while? if so for how long?

You could run the external alongside the internals (for approx 4 weeks to allow it to grow the bacteria needed) or you could take all the media from the internal filter and put them directly into the external, known as cloning and keep an eye on the stats for a week or so.
