hello so i really like rock set ups like you would see for african cichlids but my tank is only 29 gallon so is there any small cichlid that would suit a rock set up ? my ph would be close to neutral... i would also like a fish that a could give a go at breeding as i have space to raise fry.

thanks in advance

While a 110l/29g tank is too small for Malawi cichlids, there is no reason why you could not do a small Tanganyika setup eg. "Sumbu Dwarf" trio hareem; pair of Julidochromis dickfeldi; pair of Lamprologus caudopunctatus.

thanks for your advice! not to keen on any of the fish you suggested tho but it gives me an idea

this might sound stupid but i more less want to have a miniature Malawi set up with loads of rocks but i want a type of cichlids that would be happy in that set up ? :S

Don't think it's possible in a 29 gallon. most malawis are too aggressive and like to be in larger groups than what your tank can provide.

You're going to be hard pushed to find anything to replicate the mbuna style tank you're after. Most if not all american dwarf cichlids prefer slightly acidic water, so an all rock tank would probably raise the ph more than you would want. Also, at most you're looking at 2 pairs of dwarf cichlids... That's going to be nothing like the tank you envisaged.

yea well thats just one of those things i cant have i take it  but awk well not to worry i will find something to occupy my 29gallon i will prob set it up woods and plants then :/ when i was setting up my mates Malawi tank on the weekend i was quite prob of my work and made me want to replicate it only on a smaller scale as i know for sure it wouldnt be too nice putting malawis in there

well thanks for you help really appreciate it

The Tanganyikan cichlids I suggested are only examples, there are plenty of others, but they should not be overstocked like Malawi setups. Besides, the tank should soon be teaming with life, when the two or three pairs have youngsters.
