I asked my LFS what their "Kiwi Wood" does to the water. They said it might lower pH so I should get a pH buffer or something like that, and that it would tint the water for a while, which would go away on its own. Is all of this correct?

We have a 20 gallon tank.

As wood decomposes, it can lower Ph as well as water hardness and can add acidity to water. You would only need a buffer if you wanted to keep the water conditions the same as they were before the wood was added. If you want the water to be hard or non acidic it wouldn’t be in your best interest to put any wood in the tank. Hope I helped!
