I have a large altum angel, 15 neon tetras, to put in a new 90g.

I also want to try, perhaps, a pair of discus in the tank.
If the discus mate, am I asking for trouble, I ve heard they can get aggressive; but will a 90g lightly stocked help the situation?

The tank will be moderately to heavily planted.

has the angel already been with the neons?

cos angels tend to eat neons unless theyve grow up together and even then theres a risk.

the discus should be fine and if you lightly stock then any aggression wont really matter cos there should be plenty of space to hide!

If i were you, i would sell the angel (its not reccomended to keep angels with discus) and have 8 discus and your neons too.
that means you could have many variations in discus, and 4 pairs would/could form...

or you could have 6 discus, the neons and some corys (5-8 maybe)...

the reason that it isnt recconmended to keep discus with angels is beause of parasites or something that angels can often carry, and they dont bother the angels too much, but to discus it can cause real problems...
if you spend £100+ on an adult pair, and then have them killed by an angel, then its a big loss...

that thing about the viruses is apparently a myth tho.

someone sed that on here the other day.
Hmmm....
well i personally wouldnt risk £100+ worth of fish on it, but its up to you.

I don't think it's a myth, but regardless you shouldn't keep Angels and Discus together because they don't mix that well. Angels are very fast feeders and they will easily out compete a Discus for food. Discus are eat more slowly and like to pick at their food. Angels can also be more aggresive than Discus.

I would rehome the agnel then buy a group of 6-8 discus if you want discus.

I think me and kev seem to be thinking along the same lines about the angel...
To me, id think of it like this: would you like to have an understocked tank, with some risks, and only 1 pair of discus, or a more peaceful tank, with 3 or 4 pairs of discus.?

Would be an awesome set-up, and you could have various colour forms too.

Well I beleive that the angelfish do give a paracite to discus if housed together. All people that I know that have kept discus and angelfish (after me telling them about the problem with housing them together) have had the discus die. I can get a adult pair discus for $120.00 and that is a big loss to take a chance with the angelfish

Well that may be ture about Angels eating quicker personally Ive heard that it is a good thing if the Discus has a bit of compition when it comes to feeding time. And Angels are more aggresive then Discus but if your Discus is 3" or more bigger then your angel it should be fine. The most i would be worried about is parasites.

Why would it be a good idea for the discus to have competition at feeding time? You would put the food in the tank, the angels would eat a vast majority of it, the discus would get a little. Then after the food is eaten fairly quickly the discus will still be hungry and wanting to graze for more food and there won't be any.

My angel feeds out of my hand, I could feed "her" off to the side and distract the other fish with food else where, of course I couldnt do this when out of town.....hmmmm

I would not try discus and angels together.. why risk it?

Just doesn't make sense to me.... you can find other fish similar to angels to keep with your discus.

Ok , I now have the 90g and I am in the process of maturing it slowly.

I REALLY want to keep my angel, "she" is larger and has more extensive finnage than ANY angel I have EVER seen anywhere....I am willing to understock to keep discus with my angel. What do you think about 5 discus one angel in a 90g tank? With 3-5 corries too...
.
I know the parasites issue and I have researched it in length and it is not a concern for me....

My concern is ONLY aggression, are the angel or the discus more aggressive; remember the angel will be alone and the discuss will be in a shoal and likely par up....

I should also say, that I AM going to keep my angel. I wont get discus if need be but I am finding it hard to find tankmates for this mature angel that has not been with another angel since 1"....

''I know the parasites issue and I have researched it in length and it is not a concern for me....''

How can you not be concerned that there is a strong possibility any discus you buy could die.. I don't understand.. if you've already got the angel, stock the tank around the angel... no point in putting the health of any fish at risk.
