I recently had a situation were one of my favourite fish became ill, i moved the fish to the hospital tank and treated accordingly but the fish didnt make it. I must admit when the fish was swimming up side down bumping into everything, i found it quiet disturbing. This was because it was my favourite and biggest fish.

If you get to a point were you know you fish isnt going to survive, what do you do? ie leave the fish to suffer / give them every chance or take the fish out and make it relatively quick?

Cheers Matt

If a fish is suffering, I have no other choice than to put it down. There are many methods to do this, but the preferred methods are decapitation and blunt force trauma (kinda messy and may not be the right thing if you are squeamish.) After those 2 messy options I think next on the list would be ice water.

Didn't think this was a very humane way of doing it but could be wrong. I remeber reading something about clove oil. And When it came to me i used decapitation. Wasn't easy but i think it was better for him.

after doing research one of the most humane ways listed was to put a glass or jug of tank water in the freezer until you get a thin layer of ice over the top (sort of an ice bath)
remove the container from the freezer and break the ice , put the container on top of the tank
then catch the fish and either lower it or let it go into the water - they die instantly
I have had to do this on 2 guppys that split during heavy pregnancys

HOWEVER many people confuse this with the other freezer method which involves placing the fish in the water and letting it freeze in the freezer - i could not do that

Yes it would be a very slow death. just a thought though. Adding Salt to the ice method you mentioned above would lower the freezing point of the water therefore making it colder when the ice forms on top. Hopefully speeding up the process. Still sad to think about it though.
