I was toying with the idea of getting a betta to fill a superfish wave 15l tank I got when I subscribed to PFK. After a month or so of the tank sitting empty I finally gave in and set it with black sand, rocks and a nice big live plant as I have read that bettas like somewhere to snooze! I'm really pleased with the tank, it's so neat the way they filter and heater and all the cables are kept out of sight and you can choose the type and level of light.

And quicker than expected: HERE HE IS!

I really wasn't expecting to get a betta today but I popped into a fish shop on my lunch break, I saw him and I had to have him. So after work I went back in to ask how much he cost, and they gave him to me for free!

He's called One-Eyed Willie, no prizes for guessing why!

And here's his not-so-photogenic side!

I didn't notice the blue on him in the shop but he really is a lovely colour.

He's been in his tank for a few hours now and he seems to be doing really well. He's on his own at the moment, am considering trying him out with some dwarf cories as I have some in my 65l which are so teeny tiny they tend to get a bit lost in there.

Here he is checking out his tank:

Can anyone tell me the breed? I am so brand new to bettas, I could really do with some hints and tips I guess!

hes beautiful, im no good with types but i'll have a stab in the dark at crowntail :)

He looks like a crowntail to me too, although with that split in the middle of his tail he could be a torn up double tail. Here's some basic info:

- Preferred temp 78-82 degrees F (a few degrees lower is ok too, but if he gets lethargic or dull in color turn up the temp)
- Diet: 6 pellets per day, New Life Spectrum or Omega One Betta Buffet are the best brands
- Frozen or live foods in the place of pellets are great, bettas LOVE frozen bloodworms
- Fasting for one day per week seems to help with their digestive processes; bettas can easily become bloated from overfeeding;
- Be careful not to overfeed, bettas have tiny stomachs (about the size of their eyeballs)
- As you mentioned, they like hiding spots to sleep in. Also floating plants for them to hang out in are great since they breathe from the surface.
- They do not tend to like strong filter flow so if you can turn down the filter to a minimum setting go ahead and do that
