What are the aquarium lights actually for, and how long should they be on for?

They help your live plants grow and I was told they bring out the colour in your fish. It is essential for healthy growth just like sunlight is to us. ( I think)!
i was advise that planted tanks lights should be on for 10-12 hours a day and for non planted tanks about 8 hours

the main reason for lighting is for your plants. Most fish can do away with lighting bu this would make them very lathargic and you wouldnt be able to see the fish.

The other reason for this is that in your tank there is bacteria and algae. some fish live on this as a substatue for other meals. so in some aspect it is good and other aspects if bad.

to much light and you will get overrun by Algea

Thanks everyone that really helped.

Speak again soon probably when i run into another problem
