Switch on Sky News, there is a Northern Bottlenose Whale up the river Thames (rather it than me  )

Poor thing has beached itself a couple of times, some brave people keep getting in the Thames and splashing at it to get it away form the shoreline. It's been up past Battersea, there is meant to be another (possibly a parent) down near Southend.

this one is 15ft according to the story

*contemplates bunking work and jumping on the tube to go have a looksee*

it wont last long in the thames like. Yeeeww :D

Well it seems to have turned around now the tide is coming in, it is heading into the current, so now it's going back towards the sea, but it has about 40 miles to open water apparently

I walked down there as I work 5 mins from Westmister but he had already moved up stream. :X

Good, fingers crossed he makes it.

Still there last I heard. Though it's difficult for the rescue workers to tell in the dark, they did report an hour ago that it seemed to be moving out to sea again.

I think they're concerned that there's probably more as the normally travel in small groups, then again, it's a mid-atlantic whale apparently so no idea why it's in the Thames!

Maybe someone flushed it when it got too big for their tank.
:shifty:

We get all sorts of marine mammals trapped in the Thames, in the past we have had dolphins and seals up as far as Kingston upon Thames in Surrey. It mainly happens during spring when the higher than average tides mean the gates are open at the Thames barrier for longer which leaves a longer window period for the animals to swim in.

Also to all those people saying ewwww about the Thames it is now the cleanest major urban river in England thanks to major projects to clean up pollution and stop the introduction of industrial waste and sewage. Rivers like the Severn, Mersey and Trent are far more heavily polluted in their lower reaches.
