hey guys.
finally went out with my club today dipnetting in the north part of the Everglades.
this was my first time, so i didnt catch the best of what was there, but i'm proud of what i did get.
in total i must have gotten 150-200 fish, ~100 shrimp, 5 snails and 3 crayfish (plus 2 snakes, 2 praying mantis, countless spiders, etc)...

anyways, here are the fish. i know very little about these fish, so if you could identify the ones i dont know, and/or verify the ones i have an idea about, that'd be great!

1. Blue-Fin Killie (?)

2. Florida Flagfish

3. Tilapia sp. (?)

8. the ever-present Gambusia sp. "mosquito fish" - caught surprisingly few of these compared to the rest of the fish...

9. the snails

comments, questions, and information welcome! :good:

Your'e so lucky to live in a sub-tropical area. Where any of these habitats brakish? I believe 7 may be a male or the species in picture 6.

Maybe next time I'm home I'll go dipnetting and show you guys what the Appalacians have to offer.

the grass is always greener...i'd love to live in real america, not down here where we have 2 seasons and too much road rage.

the fish were all caught in 4 different rest stops along a highway through the everglades...all of this area is freshwater, sorry!

We have all four seasons. We get Spring, where it rains like crazy, summer, where it gets unbearably hot( can be in the low 100's in a parcticularly hot summer), fall, where the average temp is 60 degree's and leaves are all over the place, and then winter. Last year, it hit -20 below . Our pipes insulation didnt work and they froze, then our basement flooded. Are you sure you want to live in " real America? "

i live in California:

Winter... 60*, Spring is 80*, summer is 120* and fall is 70*

So cool that you live somewhere you can do this & find such interesting fish, V jealous! They are beautiful fish, will you be keeping them all?

think if i went netting fish here in my local pond i'd be lucky to get c arp, tench and most likely just end up with tadpoles lol

No5...Looks very much like a Tootchcarp (Killifish species) possibly from the genus Fundulus likely to be luciae or heteroclitus
I'm not entirely sure that this is their type locality but it's worth checking out further. There is another species endemic to the Everglades namely
Elassoma evergladi ..Everglades Pygmy Sunfish. did you see any of those.
The Bluefins are amazing are the seen in abundance
A picture of the area of capture (type locality) would have been brilliant.
Contact NANFA for further identifications.

we went to four rest areas/boat ramps along Alligator Alley.

this was the first rest area we went to:

and this was the third:

yes, the bluefins were very abundant at all locations.
if i had known how pretty they would look at home, i would have kept more of the ones i caught!

thanks for the identifications guys :good:

EDIT: tomorrow i'm going dipnetting alone at a local park that made fishing legal last year.
last time i visited there were all sorts of cichlids and other fish, but i didnt have a good net. now i do, so i may post more pictures tomorrow!

Still Kribs, could you live without the 4 seasons? I would rather deal with the coldest winter night than deal with the crazy 100+ heat. Up here mid 60's is definitely still warm enough to go swimming :good: .
