I'm not going to lie. I've wanted a pair of these since the first time I spotted them in a pet store, years ago. But at the time, I was new to fish keeping and didn't have a suitable tank.

I've been running a 15 gallon tank with a few cories and some glowlight tetras, just waiting on the "right" fish. Walked into a fish store a town over that is a little mom-and-pop type operation. The smell turns most people away, because the store has a massive fish room with over 100 tanks, with most of them being open to the air, rather than closed in behind plastic in commercial displays.

Low and behold; I caught sight of these guys in a tank. He only had three pairs left, and they came from a local breeder, so I have my fingers crossed that they'll be okay in my tank. They're barely an inch long, but are already showing some pretty promising colour. They've been in my tank for a few hours, I left the lights off for a few hours, just flicked them on to see if I could see where they were, both were out front, swimming and exploring the plants and driftwood!. Looks like they're settling in well!

Food wise, the tank gets shrimp pellets Monday, Wednesday, Friday (mainly for the corydoras), Algae tabs Tuesday & Saturday (mainly for the otos), and flake every-other-day for the tetras. Should I add anything else to my feeding regime?

How fast do these guys grow? They're barely the same size as my tetras at the moment, and I know they're supposed to get a couple inches bigger.

Is there any other information I should know about these guys as far as care goes? I've done a bit of reading online, but I know that people who have actually owned them can provide a little more insight.

and... now for the pictures! They're not the greatest, but I knew that the second I released them into the tank, they'd disappear for a few hours. I tried to snap a few when they were back out front, but the boy disappeared pretty quick into the plants out of sight, and the girl was zipping around pretty quickly escaping my camera.

Caves for them would make them happy. I am betting you will get some really beautiful color from that male if his tail was that colored when stressed. The ones I had, didn't have markings at all until weeks later.

The tank itself already has lots of hiding places as it has oto cats and corydoras. But I'm thinking I'm going to need to add some more. Despite the largest corys being a good chunk larger than these little guys, I watched the male push one out of the way to eat a shrimp pellet. I watched both eat tonight at feeding time, and I wasn't expecting to see them eat for a few days.

After being in my tank for a couple hours, both have massively coloured up. Is it normal for them to be a pale-ish grey, with the dark black stripe across their body, and two smaller vertical stripes by their eyes? Both appear to be a lot more striking in their colours now. Even the female has some beautiful colours coming in, which I wasn't expecting at all after reading that I should expect a fairly dull and colourless female. :p

The female is a lot more social than the male. She tends to hang out where I can see her, whereas the male tends to hide out of sight and be more skittish. I expected the opposite. Is this normal?

Stripes are normal. Bet you'll see some amazing color in a week or two.

The male seems to pick on her quite a bit. But I was told that I can't have any more than a pair in a 15 gallon tank. Is this going to work out okay? or should I get another female?

Are they Yellows or Oranges? (reds)

Stunning find. :)

Another female would be ideal.

To be honest, I'm not too sure what they are. I just knew they were pretty. I'm going to guess orangey-red, based on the colours I'm seeing so far. I took some really awesome pictures tonight on my crazy-slow cellphone camera. I'll post them tomorrow after work. Both have really coloured up.

The tank itself is only 15 gallons, and that's why I was hesitant to get a second female, especially given that there is a tetra and mixed corydora school in the tank as well as a couple oto cats. Is there enough space in the tank for another female? (Filter is AquaClear 30)

The tank is 12 high, 12 wide, 24 long. (inches)

2 females would be ok I reckon. Plenty of caves at each end and some plants/decor to break any lines of sight will help.
