Weird Experiance With Daphnia?

i bought some live daphnia today and i first looked in the bag and noticed some of them were dead and some of them were alive
i then put them into the tank a watched the fish eat them,first thing i noticed was that soome of the daphnia were 'fluffy'? and looked mouldy but i wasnt sure??
i then notice the fish would eat them then spit half of it back out??

also one more query - can they breed in my tank and take over?? i donbt want a daphnia investation

Fish will eat them too fast for infestation.

The bags often have a furry wierd food stuff in them.

If you want to grow your own, put some in an empty see through bottle with and put it in the sun light. They will eat the algae and breed like mad.

Sounds like the daphnia you got were a bit old, probably sitting in the fishstore for a while. Fish were spitting them out because they were decomposing and probably tasted like crap with little to no nutritional value. Find out what day your lfs gets live food in and buy it on that day if possible, the fresher the better.

Jallen has the right spin on daphnia. If you can get some green water algae growing in an external container, you can feed the daphnia the green water and then feed a part of the daphnia to the fish. The daphnia are capable of cloning themselves at just a few days of age and produce many times their original number so they will keep going fairly well as long as you keep them fed. I always end up failing at maintaining a source of green water but other people end up having problems controlling green water, so go figure.
